Dow unveils fluoropolymer-free processing aid for high-performance film packaging

The technology mitigates melt fracture, reduces die lip buildup, and enhances film quality.

USA – Dow has launched DowSil 5-1050 Polymer Processing Aid (PPA), a new technology designed to meet the growing demand for fluoropolymer-free solutions in film packaging.

The innovation comes at a time when regulators and the industry are increasingly moving away from fluoropolymers, yet converters still need efficient and high-performing alternatives.

With its ability to reduce melt fracture and suppress die lip buildup in linear low-density polyethylene (PE) grades, the processing aid enables the production of smoother films with improved visual clarity.

“Historically, fluoropolymer-containing PPAs worked efficiently for most film applications,” explains Mubashir Ansari, technical service and development scientist at Dow.

“Now that those are being phased out, converters are looking for effective alternatives. With DowSil 5-1050 PPA, we’ve applied our technical experience in silicone and PE materials to offer a regulatory-compliant option that doesn’t compromise on performance.”

At the core of the technology is a silicone additive carried in PE, supplied as a masterbatch that integrates easily into existing extrusion processes.

This design ensures that film producers can adopt the solution without requiring major operational changes, as demonstrated at an industrial scale, which has already confirmed its effectiveness.

The processing aid has also been engineered to enhance efficiency by lowering die pressure, which reduces energy demand during extrusion.

Dow underlines that the new PPA delivers multiple advantages for converters. Alongside reduced haze and melt fracture for better optics, the solution minimizes die lip buildup, cutting down on downtime and scrap rates.

Importantly, it also meets strict regulatory requirements for food-contact safety, complying with both European Commission Regulation (EU) 10/2011 and US FDA 21 CFR 174.5. Its versatility allows it to be incorporated through dry or melt blending, giving processors flexibility in how they use it.

The introduction of DowSil 5-1050 PPA reflects Dow’s broader ambition to support high-growth markets, particularly flexible packaging and consumer applications.

By combining material innovation with a reliable global supply chain and localized technical expertise, the company is positioning itself as a partner to converters navigating shifting regulations and rising sustainability demands.

“By pairing innovations like this with our global supply capabilities and local technical support, we aim to equip packaging customers with the confidence and resources to succeed in the evolving industry,” Ansari adds.
