End of an era: Ellen MacArthur Foundation CEO to step down

UK – The Ellen MacArthur Foundation (EMF) has announced a significant transition as its CEO of a decade prepares to step down, marking the beginning of a new era for the organization.

Andrew Morlet, who joined EMF in January 2013 to spearhead the foundation’s business networking operations, assumed the role of CEO in 2014, steering the organization towards impactful initiatives and ambitious targets.

Morlet’s decision to relinquish his position as CEO in March 2025 comes as EMF propels towards its 2030 vision and objectives.

During his tenure, Morlet played a pivotal role in shaping EMF’s strategic direction and leading groundbreaking projects, notably in tackling plastic waste and pollution.

In partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme, EMF launched the Global Commitment in 2018, aiming to eliminate plastic waste and pollution.

Despite significant mobilization with over 1,000 participating organizations and aligned 2025 targets, a progress report in October 2023 indicated that key goals might not be met on schedule.

Ellen MacArthur, founder of EMF, expressed admiration for Morlet’s exceptional leadership and strategic acumen, highlighting his instrumental role in steering the foundation through complex challenges.

She commended Morlet’s courage and conviction in tackling global issues such as plastic packaging, which led to groundbreaking initiatives demonstrating systemic change on a global scale.

As EMF embarks on the search for a new CEO, applications are open until April 12, signaling a critical phase in the organization’s evolution.

Since its inception in 2010, EMF has emerged as a vital partner for leading global organizations, recognized by the United Nations as a key collaborator in environmental initiatives.

Through its advocacy and collaborative efforts, EMF has championed the concept of the circular economy, advocating for sustainable practices in product design, manufacturing, and consumption.

As businesses and governments increasingly recognize the tangible benefits of sustainability, the circular economy has transitioned from a conceptual ideal to a pragmatic approach embraced by industries worldwide.

The legacy of Andrew Morlet’s leadership at EMF underscores the organization’s commitment to driving systemic change and fostering sustainable practices globally.

As EMF navigates this transition, the search for a new CEO represents an opportunity to build upon past achievements and further advance the mission of creating a regenerative and sustainable future for all.
