Huhtamaki earns MSCI ESG ‘A’ Rating for sustainability excellence

FINLAND – Huhtamaki, a global leader in sustainable packaging solutions, has been awarded an ‘A’ rating in the MSCI ESG Ratings assessment for the third consecutive year.

This prestigious rating ranges from AAA to CCC and evaluates a company’s resilience to long-term environmental, social, and governance (ESG) risks and its performance relative to industry peers.

The updated rating, published on December 5, 2024, underscores Huhtamaki’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and provides an opportunity to reflect on its progress as it prepares for the year ahead.

Over the past year, Huhtamaki has prioritized understanding its impact on biodiversity and assessing the materiality of key sustainability areas.

The company acknowledges the need for further progress, referencing the Conference of Parties 29 discussions in Baku, Azerbaijan, highlighting the global shortfall in achieving sustainability targets.

Huhtamaki reaffirmed its commitment to advancing sustainable packaging solutions and operations to address these challenges.

Expansion in sustainable packaging production

In November, Huhtamaki opened a new smooth moulded fibre (SMF) lid production line at its Lurgan, Northern Ireland facility.

This investment bolsters the company’s global production capacity for SMF products, addressing the increasing demand for sustainable packaging solutions in the UK and Ireland.

The Lurgan facility, a significant addition to Huhtamaki’s SMF operations, complements existing production sites in Germany, the Netherlands, and the United States while collaborating with strategic partners in Asia.

The new production line features cutting-edge robotics and artificial intelligence for quality control and an in-house laboratory for rigorous testing.

Huhtamaki’s patented click-fit fibre lids, designed for secure closure, are home-compostable and easily recyclable, aligning with the company’s commitment to sustainability.

Huhtamaki hosted customers and stakeholders at the Lurgan site to celebrate the new production line, offering factory tours and briefings on the benefits of replacing plastic lids with sustainable fibre alternatives.

Fredrik Davidsson, President of Fiber Foodservice EAO, and Richard Smith, General Manager at Huhtamaki Lurgan, led the presentations, highlighting the investment’s role in scaling SMF production to meet customer growth ambitions in the UK and Ireland’s expanding coffee market.

Visitors also toured the site’s century-old rough-moulded fibre production line, which manufactures cup carriers and egg cartons—this showcased Huhtamaki’s long-standing expertise in fibre products.

With over 40 years of experience in fibre-based solutions, Huhtamaki continues to set industry benchmarks for quality and sustainability.

The company’s dedication to innovation and environmental responsibility has earned it a prominent position in the packaging sector, exemplified by its MSCI ESG ‘A’ rating and continued investments in sustainable production.
