Jordan launches agricultural plastic recycling plant in Deir Alla to promote circular economy

The plant aims to develop a market for recycled plastic while building a sustainable and profitable business model.

JORDAN – Jordan’s Minister of Interior Mazen Faraya has inaugurated a new agricultural plastic recycling plant in Deir Alla.

The initiative, launched in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and funded by the European Union, is expected to play a critical role in transforming waste management across the Jordan Valley.

The project, developed in collaboration with the New Deir Alla Municipality, is designed to tackle the growing issue of agricultural plastic waste while creating economic opportunities for local communities.

Speaking at the launch event, Minister Faraya hailed the initiative as a “step forward in advancing sustainable waste management” and emphasized the importance of partnerships in supporting regional development.

“The facility is more than a recycling plant, it’s a model for a sustainable and profitable business that promotes responsible waste management and supports livelihoods,” Faraya said.

He underscored the plant’s role in generating job opportunities and fostering entrepreneurship by enabling the development of innovative products from recycled plastics.

The plant is expected to serve as a catalyst for local industries by creating a reliable market for recycled agricultural plastics, commonly used in farming operations.

Faraya encouraged municipalities throughout the Jordan Valley to raise public awareness about plastic sorting and facilitate the transportation of waste to the new facility.

Describing the project as a “qualitative leap,” Faraya stressed the critical role of municipalities in integrating environmental sustainability into their development agendas.

He also expressed gratitude to local authorities and stakeholders for their active involvement in building more resilient, environmentally conscious communities.

EU Ambassador to Jordan Pierre-Christophe Chatzisavas reaffirmed the EU’s support for improving waste management systems and reducing plastic pollution.

He highlighted the project’s dual benefits, enhancing agricultural productivity while advancing local development goals.

UNDP Resident Representative in Jordan, Randa Aboul Hosn, called the recycling plant a “practical example” of how local governance, capital investment, and community engagement can be aligned to support sustainable growth.

Raed Azab, chairman of the New Deir Alla Municipality Committee, echoed the project’s potential in job creation and environmental protection.

The plant is considered a flagship initiative under Jordan’s green growth strategy, promoting improved solid waste systems and setting the groundwork for future public-private partnerships.

It opens doors for new investment in sustainable waste operations and positions Deir Alla as a leader in circular economy innovation.
