Mondi launches high-quality recycled containerboard production at Duino Mill in Italy

Once fully ramped up, the company will produce 420,000 tonnes of high-quality recycled containerboard annually

ITALY – Mondi has completed the conversion of its Duino mill in Italy, starting production on a new recycled containerboard machine in April 2025.

The facility now focuses on sustainable materials, using 100% recovered fiber to meet growing market needs.

The US$235 million project upgraded an existing paper machine to handle recycled containerboard, adding 420,000 tonnes of annual capacity once fully operational.

This expansion increases Mondi’s total output in the sector and improves delivery options for customers in Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa.

Klaus Peller, COO of Mondi Containerboard, stated that the on-time launch demonstrates the team’s dedication and supports long-term customer relationships through reliable supply and quality products.

The mill’s offerings include waste-based fluting from 80 grams per square meter and testliner from 90 grams per square meter upward.

Reels range from 0.95 to 3.35 meters wide, produced on Mondi’s largest recycled paper machine.

Its location near ports enables efficient shipping to international markets, while proximity to local areas shortens transport times.

In a recent update from May 2025, Mondi confirmed the machine’s successful start-up after a year-long conversion, emphasizing its role in providing eco-friendly packaging solutions.

By that point, operations had begun incorporating fully recycled fibers, aligning with industry shifts toward circular materials.

Mondi operates six containerboard mills globally, offering grades from 100% recycled to virgin fiber.

This variety allows customization for applications like food packaging and industrial boxes, ensuring performance and sustainability.

Peller added in his comments that the investment secures resilient supply chains and fosters joint growth with partners.

The Duino site integrates into Mondi’s network, giving customers broader access to innovative options.

Company reports indicate the mill has ramped up steadily since spring, contributing to reduced environmental impact by reusing waste materials.

On September 22, 2025, Mondi hosted over 70 corrugator representatives at the site to showcase the machine’s capabilities and discuss future collaborations.
