GERMANY – Sappi Europe, a leading paper packaging manufacturer, is enhancing its portfolio with the introduction of three innovative barrier paper solutions tailored for food and beverage applications.
The first of these innovations, Guard ICC, is a flexible packaging paper specifically designed for applications requiring dimensional stability and double-sided protection, making it ideal for ice cream cones.
Equipped with barrier properties against water vapour and grease on both sides, Guard ICC features a machine-glazed surface.
According to Sappi, this bleached kraft paper excels in flexographic or gravure printing processes and conversion processes like glueing and die-cutting.
The flexible paper solution is designed to offer a premium and distinctive look and feel while being easily recyclable in the paper waste stream.
Sappi is also introducing Guard OHS, a versatile barrier paper crafted for various flexible packaging applications, including flow wraps, sachets, and pouches for food and non-food markets.
Guard OHS is available in three print side versions and grammages: Natural (62 g/m²), Silk, and Gloss (both at 77 g/m²).
All three versions boast excellent barrier properties, including resistance to water vapour, oxygen, MOSH/MOAH, aroma, and grease.
This solution offers an attractive, recyclable, and reliable alternative to packaging that requires safety properties without the need for high barriers.
Guard Twist Gloss is the third addition to Sappi’s barrier range, specifically developed for sugar confectionery and chocolate packaging.
This one-side single-coated paper has high tear strength, making it suitable for twisting applications.
Guard Twist Gloss also offers a functional coating on the reverse side, providing mild grease resistance. The glossy top surface of the machine-finished paper is designed with a premium feel in mind, and its printability and processing qualities minimize fold and colour cracking.
Available in a grammage of 45g/m², Guard Twist Gloss provides an eco-friendly alternative to non-recyclable waxed paper. According to Sappi, several confectionery packaging manufacturers have tested the paper and were highly impressed with its quality.

These new products will be showcased at Sappi’s booth (Hall 4A, Stand 306) during the Fachpack packaging industry event, which will be held from September 24 to 26 in Nuremberg, Germany.
