USA – Sustainable packaging provider Sonoco is set to showcase its rigid paperboard packaging solutions, EnviroCan and GREENCAN, at the Packaging Innovations & Empack event at the NEC Birmingham from February 21-22.
The company’s Gravy paperboard drum solution, which earned the title of Supply Chain Solution of the Year at the 2022 UK Packaging Awards, will also be prominently featured.
Designed for recyclability, the EnviroCan container is crafted from up to 85% recycled material. The can body is constructed with recycled fiber, featuring a ‘highly effective’ oxygen and moisture barrier layer to ensure food safety, prolong shelf life, and facilitate ease of recycling.
Sonoco will showcase its newest and largest paper end EnviroCan, measuring 153mm in diameter. Various EnviroCan sizes, with diameters of 73mm, 99mm, and 140mm, will be highlighted, along with a range of closures compatible with EnviroCan, including paper lids and sprinkler options.
The GREENCAN recyclable paperboard package is composed of 92-98% paperboard, offering a variety of barrier properties.
It is available in diverse shapes and sizes, including round, square, rectangular, oval, oblong, or triangular. GREENCAN also features an integrated paper lid, enabling the entire package to go through household paper recycling without disassembly when empty.
Both the EnviroCan and GREENCAN containers are suitable for the food and drink, beauty, and pharmaceutical markets.
Kieren France, VP – Sales and Marketing at Sonoco Europe, expressed excitement about exhibiting at Packaging Innovations at the NEC and the opportunity to showcase highly recyclable solutions in person.
He mentioned that visitors would have the chance to engage with the team and explore converting their packaging to more sustainable options like Sonoco’s EnviroCan and GREENCAN.
In the previous month, Sonoco successfully concluded the acquisition of Inapel Embalagens, a Brazilian manufacturer specializing in materials for flexible packaging.
The financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. Inapel will now operate under Sonoco’s existing flexible packaging operation in Pinhais, Brazil, enhancing capabilities to meet consumer demands.
Sonoco’s Graffo site, supporting rotogravure printing and lamination for eight years, will further expand its foil-based flexible packaging conversion.
Eduardo Nunes, Sonoco Flexibles’ managing director, will extend leadership duties to São Paulo locations, collaborating closely with Inapel’s former owners Rodrigo Alvarez and Monica Saniotto.
