Stora Enso unveils advanced packaging line at Oulu Mill

The line is designed to produce 750,000 tonnes of packaging board annually

FINLAND – Finnish pulp and paper giant Stora Enso has launched a cutting-edge consumer packaging board production line at its Oulu mill in Finland, following a US$1.2 billion investment.

This development is part of a broader US$1.8 billion commitment to the site since 2019, transforming former paper machines into eco-friendly board production lines.

According to the company, this upgrade has reduced the mill’s carbon dioxide emissions by 90%, marking a significant step toward sustainable manufacturing.

The new line integrates Stora Enso’s patented FiberLight Tec technology, which produces lighter, stronger, and more durable packaging materials, such as folding boxboard, kraftliners, and paper bag materials.

These products cater to diverse sectors, including frozen and dry foods, pharmaceuticals, and beverage multipacks. Most of the mill’s output is earmarked for export, supporting global demand for renewable packaging.

Hans Sohlström, Stora Enso’s president and CEO, emphasized the strategic importance of the investment: “The Oulu site strengthens our leadership in renewable packaging and boosts Finland’s export revenue.”

“Our wood-fiber-based materials are designed for recycling, offering a viable alternative to plastic.”

The company projects the Oulu mill will reach a full production capacity of 750,000 tonnes by 2027, generating annual sales of approximately US$860 million.

Matti Lielahti, head of the Oulu business unit, highlighted the efficiency of the new materials, noting that the folding boxboard is up to a third lighter than conventional options.

This reduction in weight helps customers lower packaging material use and transport emissions. He added that the mill’s proximity to a deep-water port facilitates efficient global logistics.

The Oulu mill, with roots dating back to the 1930s, highlights Stora Enso’s long-standing presence in the region.

The nearly carbon-neutral facility aligns with the company’s commitment to combating climate change through bioeconomy investments.

In related news, a recent report indicates that the global sustainable packaging market is projected to grow at a compound annual rate of 7.8% through 2030, driven by rising demand for eco-friendly materials.

Stora Enso’s advancements at Oulu position it to capitalize on this trend, reinforcing its role in replacing fossil-based packaging with recyclable alternatives.
