Coveris introduces recyclable monomaterial packaging for Tortilla wraps

The company’s MonoFlex Thermoform film aims to replace non-recyclable, mixed-material thermoforming substrates

UK – Coveris, a leader in sustainable packaging solutions, has introduced an innovative monomaterial packaging for tortilla wraps, aligning with its No Waste mission.

The MonoFlex Thermoform film replaces non-recyclable mixed-material substrates, offering a sustainable alternative that maintains a six-month shelf life for tortillas with minimal preservatives.

Developed in collaboration with a tortilla wrap manufacturer, the packaging addresses the challenge of replacing polyamide/polyethylene structures with a recyclable option.

Extensive testing at Coveris’ Food Science Lab in Gainsborough, UK, confirmed the monomaterial’s ability to protect against mold while enabling recycling in existing waste streams.

According to Katja Killian, Coveris’ flexibles business development director, the solution matches the shelf-life performance of traditional materials while advancing sustainability goals.

The MonoFlex Thermoform offers enhanced barrier properties and strong puncture resistance, ensuring product protection. Its compatibility with existing packing lines allows a seamless transition without compromising efficiency.

Available in printed or unprinted formats, the packaging supports high-definition flexographic or rotogravure printing with matte, gloss, or tactile lacquer finishes, enhancing shelf appeal and consumer experience.

In a statement, Coveris highlighted the role of its Film Science Lab and production site collaboration in creating high-performance, eco-friendly solutions.

The company recently invested US$11 million in its Halle, Germany facility to enhance its sustainable packaging capabilities.

In related news, Coveris showcased its MonoFlex Fibre range at Packaging Innovations 2024, a paper-based, recyclable packaging solution for various sectors, including bakery and dry food.

This range, designed for existing paper recycling streams, complements the MonoFlex Thermoform by offering brands flexible, eco-efficient options to meet evolving regulatory demands, such as the EU’s 2030 reusable or recyclable packaging mandate.

By replacing non-recyclable materials with high-performance monomaterials, the company helps manufacturers meet sustainability targets while maintaining product quality and operational efficiency.

The MonoFlex Thermoform is poised to set a new standard in sustainable food packaging, offering a practical solution for brands seeking to balance environmental responsibility with performance.
