TOGO – Sunna Design, renowned for its expertise in solar lighting, has achieved a significant milestone by installing 30,000 solar streetlights across rural villages.
This effort is part of the PEP’S Rural project (Program for Solar Public Lighting), a collaborative initiative aimed at enhancing the country’s public lighting infrastructure.
Supported by a public-private partnership with backing from the French Treasury Directorate, this ambitious project aligns closely with the Togolese Presidency’s National Development Plan.
Led by Mila Aziable, the Minister Delegate for Energy and Mines, the PEP’S Rural project was launched to address the limited access to light in many rural areas of Togo.
Through the Togolese Agency for Rural Electrification and Renewable Energies (AT2ER), the project targets 4,600 remote rural areas without access to the electrical grid, aiming to improve the living conditions of the Togolese population.
With a proven track record in deploying large-scale solar solutions across Africa, Sunna Design swiftly mobilized to tackle the challenge in Togo.
Manufacturing and shipping 500 solar streetlights weekly from their Bordeaux factory, Sunna Design established an on-ground team in Lomé.
Collaborating with local operators like CH2000, ACERMIITEE, GEMAS, and BATIR PLUS, they ensured the installation and 12-year maintenance of the streetlights, generating numerous direct and indirect job opportunities.
The successful installation of over 30,000 solar streetlights, particularly in the Savanes and Kara regions, has already made a noticeable impact on daily life.
These lighting solutions facilitate transportation, work, nighttime learning, and ensure safe nighttime movement, thereby contributing to limiting rural exodus and revitalizing communities.
This achievement in Togo not only marks a significant step towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 7 but also represents a long-term model for rural population access to lighting.
Ignace de Prest, President of the Executive Board of Sunna Design, emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainable development and innovation, highlighting the meaningful change brought about by the project.
Beyond providing accessibility and energy sustainability, Sunna Design prioritizes sharing value with local communities through training and employment opportunities.
By harnessing solar energy to improve residents’ quality of life, Sunna Design aims to contribute to inclusive development in these regions.
Sunna Design and the Togolese Republic are steadfast in their joint efforts to complete the PEP’S project, aiming to deploy 50,000 solar streetlights in Togo by 2024.
This commitment signifies a brighter and more sustainable future for the country, driven by the power of solar energy and collaborative partnerships.
