Greendot Biopak develops home compostable stretch film, cutting costs by 55% vs conventional plastic

The transition requires zero capital expenditure.

INDIA – Greendot Biopak has developed a certified home compostable stretch film, achieving 300-350% elongation without synthetic tackifiers, a 55% cost saving with 59.5% lower carbon emissions.

The global stretch film market, valued at over US$10.2 billion (approximately Rs. 85,170 crore), relies almost entirely on LLDPE, a fossil-derived plastic that takes up to 400 years to degrade. 

With less than 5% recycled globally, the material has been considered the hardest problem in packaging science. 

Sustainable alternatives historically failed to deliver required elongation, puncture resistance, and cling without relying on petroleum-derived synthetic tackifiers that disqualify films from genuine compostability.

The Technical Breakthrough

Greendot’s new formulation achieves natural cling without any artificial gum or synthetic tackifier. It is entirely PE-free and food safe, matching conventional LLDPE performance drop-for-drop while breaking down completely into nutrient-rich humus within certified timeframes. 

The film achieves a 3 to 3.5x stretch ratio (300-350% elongation), far exceeding conventional LDPE’s 1.5x stretch limit. This higher elongation enables greater coverage with less product usage. 

The 20-micron compostable film costs Rs. 1.13 per metre (approximately US$0.014) compared to Rs. 2.53 per metre (approximately US$0.030) for conventional 55-micron plastic film. 

The 59.5% reduction in carbon emissions saves 2.85 kg of CO₂ per kilogram of film.

Zero Capex Transition

The transition requires zero capital expenditure. 

The compostable film acts as a direct, drop-in replacement, performing seamlessly on both manual hand-wrap operations and existing high-speed automated machinery. 

For decades, the industry’s excuse has been that sustainable stretch film couldn’t handle the extreme physical demands of global supply chains. 

Rajen Bhagyodaya, Founder of Greendot Biopak, stated that the company refused to accept that, spending years engineering a film that delivers the load retention and extreme elongation that heavy industries demand, but returns safely to the earth. 

He added that the technology gap is officially closed.

Regulatory Tailwinds

The innovation arrives as global regulators tighten the net on flexible plastics. 

The EU’s PPWR mandates recyclable or compostable packaging by 2030, while India’s EPR frameworks place financial obligations on plastic producers. 

Greendot’s film holds DIN CERTCO Home Compostable certification and complies with US FDA food-contact standards, simultaneously satisfying European (EN 13432) and Indian (IS/ISO 17088) regulatory frameworks. 

Bhagyodaya noted that policymakers no longer have to risk mandating what the market cannot supply.
