UK – Aldi has introduced the “UK’s first” flat wine bottles under its own-brand Chapter & Verse label, in collaboration with Packamama, featuring an innovative packaging concept made entirely from 100% recycled PET (rPET).
Designed for convenience during picnics and BBQs, these recyclable flat bottles weigh just 63 g, making them “nearly seven times lighter and stronger than a standard glass bottle” while also being shatterproof, according to Aldi.
Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi UK, emphasizes the retailer’s commitment to sustainability: “We know shoppers are looking for greener, more sustainable products, and our aim is to continue to deliver this, while offering great value and enhanced functionality.”
The partnership between Aldi and Packamama has already resulted in the removal of 42 metric tons of bottle weight from the launch.
The compact design of these flat bottles enables 30% more bottles to be loaded onto pallets and transported to supermarkets, thereby reducing carbon emissions by taking “30% of trucks off the road.”
Moreover, the unique shape of the packaging allows for easy stacking and organization, optimizing storage space without compromising on volume compared to traditional wine bottles.
Aldi’s Chapter & Verse Shiraz and Chardonnay options offer distinct flavor profiles, catering to diverse preferences.
In addition to the flat wine bottles, Aldi has introduced its Chassaux et Fils Méditerranée Rosé in an rPET bottle, further contributing to environmental sustainability by removing 18.15 metric tons of bottle weight.
Furthermore, Aldi is committed to reducing the average bottle weight of all its still wine products by 8% by 2025, a move aimed at enhancing both cost efficiency and environmental sustainability.
This initiative aligns with broader trends in the alcoholic beverage sector, with companies like Carlsberg and Owens-Illinois Glass (O-I Glass) also prioritizing lightweighting measures to reduce material use and carbon emissions, underscoring a collective industry effort towards sustainability.
O-I Glass’s Estampe bottle, weighing approximately 390 g, stands out for its significantly reduced weight compared to traditional wine bottles, exemplifying a 25% decrease in overall carbon emissions compared to the standard 500 g counterparts.
Endorsed by the Carbon Trust, the Estampe bottle not only reflects O-I’s dedication to sustainability but also contributes to the company’s Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2030.
