MOROCCO – Aluminium Products Company (Alucop), a Jordanian firm specializing in metal processing, has inaugurated a new plant in Berrechid, Morocco.

The company says this facility will enhance its recycling operations, mainly focusing on copper and aluminum.

This strategic move aligns with the broader vision of fostering a green economy within the Kingdom of Morocco.

The newly established plant, which began operations on April 30, 2024, is located in Berrechid’s expansive industrial zone.

This zone spans 412 hectares and houses 104 industrial units across various sectors, including electricity, agri-food, textiles, mechanics, cosmetics, and agriculture.

The opening ceremony was graced by the presence of Ryad Mezzour, Morocco’s Minister for Industry and Trade, who highlighted that the project is a manifestation of the royal vision to catalyze the emergence of a new green economy as a dynamic source of growth.

Alucop’s facility is set to produce a significant output, including 5,000 tonnes of copper anodes, 4,000 tonnes of copper wire rod, 2,500 tonnes of copper billets, 12,000 tonnes of brass billets, 5,000 tonnes of aluminum billets, 12,000 tonnes of brass bars, and 20,000 tonnes of aluminum ingots annually.

The project, which required an investment of 95 million Moroccan dirhams (approximately €8.8 million), aims to bolster the local economy through the creation of 110 new direct jobs and anticipates generating additional sales exceeding 700 million dirhams (US$70.31 million).

This initiative underscores Alucop’s commitment to promoting circular economy practices that contribute significantly to environmental sustainability by minimizing metal waste pollution, a crucial step in protecting the region from potential environmental and health risks.

Minister Mezzour emphasized the importance of advancing waste recovery processes and promoting a circular economy as vital for Morocco’s transition towards a green economy.

This transition is expected to enhance the kingdom’s control over critical natural resources, boost job creation, and increase the regional attractiveness for investments.

The establishment of the Berrechid plant stems from an investment agreement signed between the Kingdom of Morocco and Alucop in November 2020.

This agreement is part of the broader “Ecosystems of the metallurgical and mechanical industries sector” performance contract initiated on May 2, 2016.

Alucop, with its headquarters in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, and an additional facility in Jeddah, is recognized as the leading aluminum extrusion company in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

This further solidifies its presence and commitment to sustainable industrial practices in Morocco.
