Amcor slashes dairy pot weight to 31.6g, delivering 9% carbon reduction across 1kg yoghurt format

The reduced weight translates to a 9 percent reduction in carbon emissions based on anticipated production volumes.

GLOBAL – Amcor has launched an updated UniPak 1kg pot for the dairy market with a combined container and lid weight of 31.6 grams, achieving up to a 9 percent reduction in carbon emissions compared to the previous version while maintaining full performance and line compatibility.

The lightweight round container is made entirely from polypropylene, making it recycle-ready in countries with appropriate infrastructure.

The compression-moulded lid offers excellent top-load strength and remains fastened to the pot even under severe squeezing, while improved tamper-evidence enhances product security.

By the Numbers: Material Efficiency

At 31.6 grams total weight, the pot and lid achieve meaningful lightweighting without compromising strength.

The reduced weight translates to a 9 percent reduction in carbon emissions based on anticipated production volumes.

The container is available in multiple shapes, square, rectangular, round, and oval, with shared lid diameters allowing customers to simplify inventory management. A protective collar safeguards the lid during transport and enhances stack stability.

Response to Growing Dairy Segment

Katrina Burrett, product line director at Amcor Global Rigids Packaging Solutions, explained that the dairy sector continues to grow, with particularly strong showing in larger yoghurt formats.

She noted that the 1kg size is especially popular, and the new UniPak enables brand owners to maximize opportunities with a high-performance solution that also supports sustainability objectives.

Supporting Brand Differentiation

The UniPak remains compatible with wide decoration options, including in-mould labelling, enabling strong shelf presence.

The lightweight lid is designed to be liquid-tight while maintaining high top-load strength.

Despite its lighter weight, the container retains robustness and product protection, while more compact dimensions allow easy handling in the home.

Alignment with Amcor’s Decarbonization Strategy

The launch aligns with Amcor’s Decarbonization Roadmap, featuring product redesign, recycled content, renewable electricity, and supply chain collaboration.

In fiscal year 2023, Amcor achieved a 10.2 percent reduction in absolute GHG emissions compared to FY22, with 22 sites reaching 100 percent renewable electricity use.

What This Means for Packaging

For the dairy packaging sector, the new UniPak demonstrates that lightweighting and performance can advance together.

By achieving a 9 percent carbon reduction while maintaining robustness for high-speed filling lines, Amcor provides brand owners with a practical pathway to meet sustainability targets without compromising product integrity.
