DS Smith, Elvial introduce corrugated fanfold packaging for Greece’s industrial sector

The new single-sheet corrugated solution is designed to improve supply chain efficiency, reduce waste, and enhance protection for heavy aluminium products.

GREECE – DS Smith has partnered with Elvial to introduce a single-sheet corrugated cardboard packaging solution for industrial customers in Greece, aimed at improving product protection while advancing sustainability across the supply chain.

The solution, known as Fanfold, has been custom-designed to meet Elvial’s production and logistics requirements, particularly for transporting heavy aluminium profiles used in construction and manufacturing applications.

By replacing conventional multi-sheet packaging with a single corrugated sheet structure, the system offers greater flexibility and operational efficiency.

According to Giorgos Filippoglou, managing director for the Greek Cluster, Packaging Division at DS Smith Hellas, the solution demonstrates how packaging innovation can address both operational and environmental challenges in industrial logistics.

“Fanfold is a fantastic example of innovation in industrial packaging,” Filippoglou said.

“The solution offers flexibility and reliable protection for customers’ products while supporting supply chain optimization and sustainability goals. We are proud to help our customers in the Greek industrial sector strengthen their competitiveness in international markets.”

Elvial manufactures aluminium systems used in a wide range of industries, including construction, lighting, automotive components, and medical equipment.

These products, such as door and window frames and partition systems, are produced in multiple shapes and dimensions, requiring adaptable packaging for safe transportation.

The Fanfold packaging design features an accordion-style corrugated cardboard structure that can be folded and adjusted to fit products of varying sizes.

This allows Elvial to package items more efficiently while ensuring adequate protection during transport to domestic and international markets.

By relying on a single sheet of fibre-based corrugated cardboard, the solution simplifies packaging preparation and assembly.

The design provides natural cushioning properties, eliminating the need for additional filler materials and reducing packaging complexity.

Tania Tzika, president of Elvial, said the solution offers both logistical and environmental benefits.

“DS Smith Fanfold gives us the flexibility we need to manage and transport products of different dimensions with confidence, while simplifying our production and supply chain processes,” Tzika said.

“The collaboration also supports our sustainability targets and strengthens overall operational efficiency.”

Beyond operational improvements, the packaging solution is expected to reduce material consumption, packaging waste, and handling time, ultimately lowering costs while improving space utilization in storage and transportation.

The initiative also aligns with evolving European regulatory frameworks such as the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, which is reshaping how packaging is designed, used, and recycled across the region.

Across Europe, manufacturers are increasingly turning to fibre-based packaging alternatives to meet regulatory requirements and sustainability targets.

Companies like DS Smith are investing heavily in recyclable corrugated solutions designed to replace more complex or resource-intensive packaging formats in industrial supply chains.
