Ecohelix secures grant for WOODMER Seal Biopolymer project in EU LIFE

SWEDEN – Swedish biotech company Ecohelix has been awarded €2.2 million (US$2.5 million) in funding from the EU’s environmental and climate action funding instrument (L’Instrument Financier pour l’Environnement (LIFE)) to accelerate the market readiness of its product for packaging applications.

The 36-month initiative launched this month will focus on bringing Ecohelix’s patented Woodmer Seal to market.

The grant enables the company to scale up its formulation capabilities for packaging applications, preparing it for the market.

“We are excited to collaborate with three key European commercial partners from Sweden, Italy, and Finland on this journey. This collaborative approach will be vital for the future replication and scaling of our technology across Europe and beyond,” says Ecohelix.

“This EU LIFE funding underscores the potential of Ecohelix’s technology to address critical sustainability challenges and aligns perfectly with the EU Green Deal’s objectives. We look forward to sharing our progress and achievements as the LIFE Woodmer project unfolds.”

Not only fossil- and food-derived polymers but also PFAS chemicals are targeted by the LIFE Woodmer project to utilise wood-based biopolymers as an alternative for sustainable packaging.

Woodmer – a bio-based heat seal coating solution – is derived from neglected side streams of the pulp industry.

Ecohelix ensures the safety of the woodmer material for human contact and is readily available locally within the EU. As the project transforms it into “high-value, high-performing biopolymers,” it significantly reduces CO2 emissions, a promising step towards a more sustainable future.

Recently, Ecohelix proudly announced that its innovative WOODMER Seal had been awarded the Green Product Award 2025 in the packaging category. This esteemed recognition has solidified WOODMER Seal’s position as a reputable brand in the market, offering top-notch sustainable solutions for the packaging industry.

In the Green Product Award 2025, WOODMER Seal was honoured in the Packaging category during the award ceremony on May 15th at the Nordic Embassies in Berlin. 

After a rigorous evaluation in the packaging category based on design, innovation, and sustainability, WOODMER Seal stood out amongst the finalists, showcasing its superior performance in these key areas.
