Ericsson inks MoU with iot squared to transform waste management in Saudi Arabia

SAUDI ARABIA – Ericsson and stc Group’s iot squared have joined forces, signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at Mobile World Congress Barcelona 2024, Spain.

This collaboration aims to introduce the Ericsson Connected Recycling (ECR) platform as a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, marking a significant step towards transforming waste management practices in the country.

The Ericsson Connected Recycling platform offers a comprehensive solution to address the environmental impact of waste by digitalizing reverse supply chains.

By optimizing processes, enhancing traceability and transparency, and providing opportunities to monetize waste, the platform contributes to safeguarding natural resources and promoting a sustainable future.

Central to the platform is its ability to turn waste into recycled raw materials, thereby reducing reliance on landfills and incineration.

Additionally, the powerful sustainability reporting feature empowers organizations with valuable insights to optimize operations and promote circularity.

Under the MoU, Ericsson and iot squared will initially focus on addressing Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) streams in the Kingdom.

Othman Aldahash, CEO of iot squared, emphasized the company’s commitment to leveraging IoT solutions to drive sustainability in line with the Saudi Green Initiative.

He highlighted the synergy between Ericsson Connected Recycling and iot squared’s mission to provide real-time insights for intelligent operations.

Håkan Cervell, Vice President and Head of Customer Unit stc, Saudi Arabia and Egypt at Ericsson Middle East and Africa, expressed pride in the partnership, emphasizing Ericsson’s dedication to building a better future.

He emphasized how the platform fosters circularity, innovation, and sustainability, aligning seamlessly with the goals of the Saudi Green Initiative.

The collaboration between Ericsson and iot squared represents a significant milestone in Saudi Arabia’s technological landscape, paving the way for a more sustainable economy.

By connecting buyers and sellers of waste and recycled raw material, the initiative promotes transparency and fosters a culture of environmental responsibility.

Ericsson Connected Recycling, incubated within Ericsson ONE, underscores the company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability, positioning it as a leader in driving positive change through technology.

Last September, Ericsson inked a deal with MTN Benin to recycle the latter’s end-of-life electronic and electrical equipment as part of the Ericsson Product Take-Back Program.

The collaboration has resulted in the collection, decommissioning, transportation, and recycling of over 123 metric tons of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) since 2021.
