Mondi unveils re/cycle SpoutedPouch for Sherwin-Williams’ paints

UK – Sustainable packaging leader Mondi has teamed up with Sherwin-Williams, a global paints and coatings company, to introduce the re/cycle SpoutedPouch as a refill option for concentrated paint in the UK market.

Manufactured at Mondi’s Halle/Steinfeld plant in Germany, the mono-material polyethylene pouch is designed for easy pouring and refilling, featuring a wider spout that ensures smooth dispensing while protecting the contents.

The 950ml lightweight pouch replaces the conventional 5-litre pre-mixed paint tubs, reducing plastic use by up to 90%.

Consumers are encouraged to reuse their existing tubs for mixing the concentrate with water, extending the product’s sustainability benefits.

Clear mixing instructions are printed on the pouch, and its resealable design helps preserve any unused paint concentrate for future use.

By replacing bulky rigid containers, the compact design boosts supply chain efficiency —allowing 230% more units per pallet compared to traditional paint tins.

This not only reduces transportation costs but also optimizes retail shelf space, as the pouches come in shelf-ready tear-front boxes containing five units, making stock replenishment more convenient.

“Our solution is more convenient for consumers, easier to store, and improves transport efficiency thanks to its reduced weight and size. Switching to spouted pouches rather than rigid tubs cuts plastic usage by up to 90%,” said Christina Rowe, Head of Product Marketing at Sherwin-Williams.

Tackling food waste through packaging

Beyond paints, Mondi is advancing sustainable packaging to reduce food loss. The company recently announced a three-year extension of its partnership with the UN World Food Programme (WFP), the world’s largest humanitarian organization addressing hunger.

Between 2024 and 2027, Mondi and the UN World Food Programme (WFP) will collaborate on developing sustainable alternatives to existing food packaging.

This initiative aims to improve packaging efficiency, durability, and sustainability, ensuring that essential food supplies reach those in need while minimizing environmental impact.

A key focus of the partnership is optimizing material use by incorporating sustainable virgin and recycled fibres.

By using environmentally friendly raw materials, Mondi and WFP aim to create packaging that is not only durable but also supports the transition to a circular economy, reducing reliance on single-use plastics and non-recyclable materials.

Another crucial aspect of the initiative is enhancing packaging durability to withstand the challenging transport and storage conditions often faced in crisis-affected areas.

Food supplies frequently endure long journeys across rough terrains, extreme weather, and fluctuating temperatures.

Improved packaging solutions will help ensure that food remains fresh, safe, and intact throughout the supply chain, reducing spoilage and waste.

Additionally, the project seeks to reduce food losses in regions struggling with food insecurity. One-fifth of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted annually, exacerbating global hunger issues.

By designing stronger, more efficient, and sustainable packaging, Mondi and WFP can help prevent unnecessary food loss, ensuring that critical aid reaches those in need and contributes to long-term food security solutions.

With 733 million people facing hunger and 1.9 million on the brink of famine, Mondi is committed to ensuring that vital food supplies reach those in need.

“We are proud and excited to enter the next phase of this impactful partnership with Mondi. At a time of shrinking humanitarian resources, their expertise and funding are crucial,” said Virginia Villar Arribas, Deputy Director of Private Sector Partnerships at WFP.

Andrew King, Group CEO of Mondi, reaffirmed the company’s commitment, “Our partnership with WFP reflects Mondi’s purpose—contributing to a better world through innovative and sustainable packaging solutions.”
