Nespresso South Africa unveils eco-conscious stride with Cape Town recycling center

SOUTH AFRICA – In a noteworthy stride towards sustainability, Nespresso South Africa has inaugurated a cutting-edge recycling center in Cape Town.

The facility is specifically designed to advocate and streamline the recycling process for Nespresso coffee capsules, constructed from recyclable aluminum.

Gabriel Nobre, CEO at Nespresso South Africa, shared the development on LinkedIn, expressing his elation: “I am delighted to announce that Nespresso South Africa has recently opened a new recycling center in Cape Town, covering the entire Western Cape region. This is a significant milestone in our commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.”

This initiative is a testament to Nespresso’s global pledge to sustainability and minimizing its ecological footprint.

By introducing a dedicated recycling hub, Nespresso South Africa endeavors to simplify customer participation in the recycling program, fostering a transition towards a circular economy.

Since 2014, Nespresso South Africa has joined forces with Oricol Environmental Services, a pivotal partner in establishing and driving the recycling program in the region. Through this collaboration, the company has successfully implemented a groundbreaking recycling initiative.

Annually, Nespresso South Africa manages to recycle an impressive 135,000 kilograms (135 tonnes) of used coffee capsules, showcasing unwavering dedication to waste reduction and the promotion of a circular economy, as highlighted by Nobre: “This demonstrates our dedication to reducing waste and promoting a circular economy.”

Nobre added, “We are incredibly proud of this achievement and the positive impact it has on the environment. Nespresso remains committed to driving sustainability initiatives and finding innovative solutions to reduce our ecological footprint.”

This sustainable leap by Nespresso South Africa not only curtails waste but also serves as a catalyst for raising awareness about recycling and responsible consumption. It signifies a positive shift towards a more sustainable future for coffee enthusiasts in Cape Town and beyond.

In a parallel initiative, Nespresso has recently collaborated with Royal Mail to enhance coffee capsule recycling in the UK.

Nespresso customers can now effortlessly arrange free doorstep collections using Royal Mail’s returns service or conveniently drop off capsules at any of the extensive 14,000+ Royal Mail drop-off locations, including Customer Service Points and Post Offices.

As part of Recycle Week, Nespresso commissioned research revealing that, despite 91% of British individuals claiming to often recycle, 42% find recycling confusing, and 32% find it challenging.

The partnership with Royal Mail aims to augment nationwide access to convenient and efficient Nespresso capsule recycling methods, addressing these challenges.

Nick Landon, Chief Commercial Officer at Royal Mail, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “We’re really pleased to be working with Nespresso to support their coffee capsule recycling. Everyone knows when their postie delivers, so it’s really convenient to arrange for them to collect at the same time.”
