Parkside develops compostable packaging for Bird & Blend tea bags

UK – Flexible packaging innovator Parkside has launched a fully compostable packaging solution for Bird & Blend Tea Co.’s loose tea bags.

The new packaging combines optimal barrier performance with eco-friendly materials, aligning with the growing consumer demand for sustainable solutions.

The packaging is crafted from bio-based paper and metallized NatureFlex cellulose films sourced from Futamura, made from sustainably harvested wood pulp.

This combination ensures outstanding barrier properties, preserving the freshness and extending the shelf life of Bird & Blend’s loose tea bags, which are already plastic-free.

Compostable and environmentally safe

According to Parkside, the packaging can decompose completely within 26 weeks in home compost bins or faster in industrial composting facilities. The materials break down naturally, returning to the soil without leaving harmful residues.

“This innovative approach reflects a key shift in consumer behavior toward sustainability,” says Staci Bye, New Business Development Manager at Parkside.

“Compostable packaging offers a tangible way for consumers to contribute to environmental protection.”

Bird & Blend’s commitment to sustainability and ethical integrity inspired the transition to compostable packaging.

“Our tea bags were already plastic-free, so enhancing the eco-credentials of our packaging was a natural next step,” explains Matt Hendon, Operations Director at Bird & Blend.

Parkside’s expertise in compostable solutions

Parkside has invested nearly a decade in developing compostable laminates, resulting in over 20 TÜV-certified compostable structures under its Park2Nature range.

The company’s track record includes innovative projects such as home-compostable packs for Riverford tomatoes and pouches for Optibac’s Kids Gummies probiotics.

In collaboration with Hoogly, Parkside also introduced compostable tea packaging for UK hotels earlier this year.

By combining Park2Nature material with NatureFlex metallized film, the laminate offers excellent barrier properties that maintain the tea’s freshness and aroma.

TÜV certification guarantees its biodegradability: 26 weeks in home compost and 12 weeks in industrial settings.

These initiatives demonstrate Parkside’s leadership in sustainable packaging innovation while helping brands like Bird & Blend meet growing consumer expectations for eco-friendly solutions.
