UK – Amazon has launched a new sustainable packaging solution in the UK: a recyclable paper-padded envelope designed to reduce waste and enhance sustainability.
This innovative packaging, developed with Mondi, replaces traditional plastic-lined envelopes with a shock-absorbent, paper-based alternative.
Unlike previous designs that used bubble wrap, the new envelope eliminates plastic entirely, making it fully recyclable at home.
The padded envelope provides lightweight, shockproof protection for products, ensuring items remain safe during delivery while minimizing environmental impact.
Amazon’s commitment to reducing packaging waste is a driving force behind this innovation. By optimizing the packaging’s type, material, and weight, the company aims to enhance circularity, avoid unnecessary waste, and lower carbon emissions—without sacrificing product safety or functionality.
The new paper-padded envelopes offer several benefits over traditional plastic packaging. Their lightweight design reduces shipping weight, cutting down on material usage.
Additionally, the envelope’s flexible structure allows for efficient packing, reducing wasted space and further minimizing environmental impact.
“Amazon stopped using traditional bubble wrap-padded envelopes in Europe several years ago, which presented a challenge to develop light, flexible, and fully recyclable paper packaging that provides the same protection,” said Thais Blumer, European head of Sustainable Packaging for Amazon.
“These envelopes are easy to pack, simple for customers to recycle, and enable damage-free deliveries.”
The strength and resilience of the new packaging come from its specially engineered paper construction and corrugated inner lining, offering exceptional protection despite its thin profile.
Available in three sizes, the envelopes are suitable for a wide range of products, including skincare, health supplements, office supplies, and toys.
Amazon’s broader sustainability efforts are reflected in this packaging shift. Over 50% of Amazon Europe’s shipments now use reduced, recyclable packaging, and the company has reportedly avoided more than three million tonnes of unnecessary packaging since 2015.
The company’s goal is to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, and reducing packaging waste is key to this effort.
In June, Amazon further addressed environmental concerns by replacing plastic air pillows with recycled paper filler in its North American packaging.
This initiative, which aims to eliminate plastic air pillows by year-end, is expected to prevent the use of nearly 15 billion plastic air pillows annually.
By focusing on sustainable materials, Amazon continues to innovate in packaging while balancing environmental responsibility with efficient, damage-free deliveries.
