Amcor joins forces with Tip Top for eco-friendly bread packaging

AUSTRALIA – Amcor has partnered with Tip Top Bakeries to introduce new bread bags made from 30% recycled plastic, a significant step in reducing the reliance on virgin plastics in the Australian sliced bread market.

This initiative, certified under the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS Scheme, follows a mass balance approach, ensuring a controlled mix of recycled and virgin materials in packaging production.

The new sustainable bread bags, launched in September, are now available across select Tip Top products at major Australian retailers.

By December, Tip Top projects that this move will eliminate 160 tonnes of virgin plastic from its packaging.

This builds on Tip Top’s 2020 transition to 100% recycled and recyclable cardboard bread tags, an effort that removed 140 million single-use plastic tags annually.

Richard Smith, Sustainability Director at Amcor Flexibles Asia Pacific, highlighted the impact of this collaboration, “At Amcor, we are committed to pioneering advanced packaging solutions that reduce reliance on virgin plastics while maintaining the quality and safety consumers expect.

“This partnership not only reinforces Tip Top’s leadership in the bakery aisle but also demonstrates the power of collaboration in driving a circular economy forward in Australia.”

The ISCC PLUS certification ensures that at least 30% of the plastic in Tip Top’s bread bags comes from recycled sources.

Graeme Cutler, Sales Director and ESG Lead at Tip Top Australia reaffirmed the company’s sustainability goals, “Tip Top is committed to feeding Australian communities more sustainably and responsibly. By addressing plastic waste while ensuring the freshness and quality of our bread, we are taking meaningful steps toward a greener future.

“This initiative marks a key milestone in our partnerships with packaging suppliers to drive positive change in our industry.”

This latest initiative aligns with Amcor’s broader sustainability strategy, which includes its AmPrima portfolio of mono-material, recycle-ready solutions.

Last year, Amcor introduced recycle-ready packaging for snack manufacturer Lentil Coated Peanuts, reducing its carbon footprint by 51%, water consumption by 51%, and non-renewable energy use by 41%.

The AmPrima packaging is certified for recyclability by cyclos-HTP in countries with existing PE or PP recycling streams and aligns with the CEFLEX (Circular Economy for Flexible Packaging) guidelines.

With this latest advancement, Tip Top and Amcor continue to lead the way in sustainable packaging solutions, reinforcing their commitment to reducing plastic waste and promoting a circular economy.
