Amcor launches US$35M healthcare packaging coating facility in Subang Jaya, Malaysia

Coated medical paper is a critical component of sterile barrier systems, and air-knife coating technology applies precise, uniform coating layers without direct contact, reducing defects and improving consistency.

MALAYSIA – Amcor has opened an advanced healthcare packaging coating facility in Subang Jaya, Selangor on April 24, representing an investment of over US$35 million, introducing air-knife coating technology to the region for the production of coated medical paper used in sterile medical device packaging.

The facility was facilitated by the Malaysian Investment Development Authority and marks a significant expansion of Amcor’s manufacturing footprint in Malaysia and Southeast Asia.

MIDA stated that this investment further strengthens Malaysia’s position as an integrated regional hub for healthcare packaging, enhancing supply chain resilience through local access.

Why Air-Knife Coating Matters for Medical Packaging

Medical device packaging requires sterile barriers that maintain integrity through sterilization processes (ethylene oxide, gamma irradiation, or steam) while allowing sterilant penetration and then sealing out contaminants.

Coated medical paper is a critical component of sterile barrier systems, and air-knife coating technology applies precise, uniform coating layers without direct contact, reducing defects and improving consistency.

By bringing this capability to Malaysia, Amcor reduces lead times for regional medical device manufacturers who previously sourced coated papers from Europe or North America.

Strengthening Malaysia’s Medical Device Industry

Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid, CEO of MIDA, explained that Amcor’s investment reinforces Malaysia’s position as a strategic centre for advanced manufacturing in the region.

He noted that beyond expanding capacity, this facility strengthens local supply chain resilience, accelerates technology adoption, and supports the development of skilled Malaysian talent, in line with the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 and National Investment Aspirations.

MIDA will continue to facilitate high-quality investments that generate sustainable, long-term value for Malaysia.

In 2025, Malaysia approved RM152 million (approximately US$34 million) in medical device investments, signalling sustained global confidence in the country as a preferred manufacturing base for the healthcare industry.

A Long-Term Commitment to Asia Pacific

Chris Kenneally, Amcor Flexibles Asia Pacific president, stated that the facility underscores the company’s long-term commitment to supporting its partners in the healthcare sector across Asia Pacific.

He added that it also demonstrates the strength of collaboration across Amcor’s global network in bringing advanced capabilities to the region and serving customers more effectively.

When Packaging Protects Patients

The paper that wraps a sterile surgical kit does not look like high technology. But the coating on that paper, applied by Amcor’s new air-knife system, is the difference between sterility and infection.

For Malaysia, hosting that capability is not just about investment; it is about supply chain security for the region’s healthcare systems.
