BASF partners with Metpack to launch Ezycompost paper for sustainable food packaging

Ezycompost offers robust barrier protection against grease, liquids, fats, and mineral oils, while also enduring high temperatures.

TURKEY – German chemical giant BASF has teamed up with Metpack, a Turkish specialist in extrusion coatings, to develop Ezycompost, a new coated paper and paperboard solution designed for environmentally friendly food packaging applications.

At the heart of Ezycompost is BASF’s ecovio 70 PS14H6, a high-performance, certified compostable biopolymer.

The material meets key international standards, including EN 13432 for industrial compostability and AS 5810 for home composting.

It is also approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for direct food contact, making it suitable for a wide range of applications such as hot and cold beverage cups, trays, and pots used in freezing or microwaving.

Ezycompost offers robust barrier protection against grease, liquids, fats, and mineral oils, while also enduring high temperatures, including direct exposure to boiling water up to 100°C.

These properties make it a reliable, food-safe alternative to conventional plastic-based or PLA-coated packaging.

According to Sühan Gürer, Metpack’s Vice President of Sales and New Project Development, the innovation delivers a strong value proposition to food brands.

“With Ezycompost, we can offer the food industry the best of both worlds when it comes to coated paper packaging,” he said.

“Its faster processing and home-compostability is a double advantage compared to PLA coatings, which are only industrially compostable.”

One of the key advantages of Ezycompost is its compatibility with existing manufacturing lines.

The coating is up to 40% thinner than PLA, enabling higher production speeds. It performs similarly to polyethylene in coating line speed, does not adhere to chill rolls, and provides excellent sealing and printing performance.

Moreover, the material supports mono- and coextrusion processes without requiring extra adhesives.

Importantly, Ezycompost breaks down in home composting systems without leaving persistent microplastics, aligning with growing consumer and regulatory demand for circular, low-impact packaging.

Beyond food packaging, BASF’s ecovio is already used in products like cling films, organic waste bags, produce bags, and agricultural films, reinforcing its reputation as a versatile and sustainable alternative to conventional plastics.

The launch of Ezycompost marks a significant step toward making compostable packaging mainstream in foodservice and retail markets.
