UK – British waste management company Biffa has unveiled a new hazardous waste transfer station in Hertfordshire, UK, signaling a significant expansion of its service capacity in the region.
The Welham Green depot, replacing an older site, boasts over six times the annual capacity and is poised to reduce carbon emissions for both Biffa and its clients.
This state-of-the-art facility enhances Biffa’s hazardous waste management capabilities across the Home Counties and the South of England.
It is designed to process hazardous and select non-hazardous materials from various sectors, including manufacturing, logistics, warehousing, and retail.
The station features a dedicated fireproof zone for flammable waste and directs waste to specialized processors and recyclers.
Part of Biffa’s comprehensive 24/7 specialist services network, the Welham Green depot aligns with the company’s commitment to sustainability. It is anticipated to cut down on vehicle journeys, resulting in significant carbon emissions savings of nearly 930 tonnes per annum.
This initiative is part of Biffa’s broader strategy to deliver comprehensive waste management solutions, including consultancy on packaging best practices.
Simon Dale, Biffa Specialist Services regional general manager, highlighted the benefits of the new transfer station, emphasizing its capacity to offer customers in the South of England simpler and more sustainable solutions for hazardous and challenging non-hazardous waste.
The centralization of operations in the South East reduces vehicle mileage, contributing to substantial fleet-related carbon savings and aligning with Biffa’s journey towards net zero emissions.
In addition to handling hazardous materials, Biffa’s specialist services team manages large-scale construction and event waste, provides food and packaging solutions, and offers tailored services for manufacturers.
Meanwhile, Biffa recently launched a nationwide recycling service aimed at diverting millions of hot and cold takeaway beverage cups from general waste in the UK.
With an estimated 62 million single-use tea, coffee, and cold drink cups discarded weekly, Biffa’s initiative targets businesses, requiring them to recycle fiber-based, single-use cups, starting October 2025.
This integrated disposal, collection, and recycling solution aims to assist cafes, restaurants, service stations, supermarkets, and other businesses in responsibly managing their waste streams.
The comprehensive service includes cup disposal points, bags, bins, compliance advice, and practical and technical assistance.
Building on its existing disposable vape recycling service, Biffa envisions that the takeaway cup recycling scheme will aid businesses in embracing circular practices and meeting upcoming legislative requirements.
