British Crisp Co debuts fully recyclable paper crisp packet

UK – The British Crisp Co has joined forces with Evopak and Aquapak to unveil a fully recyclable paper packet.

Led by The British Crisp Co’s founder, Tom Lock, this groundbreaking crisp packaging is the culmination of three years of dedicated research and development.

Combining paper with HydropolTM, an eco-friendly material developed by Aquapak Polymers, these packets boast a thin layer of vacuum-deposited aluminum to ensure the crisps remain fresh while preserving the packaging’s recyclability.

Endorsed by OPRL, the bags proudly display the green ‘Recycle’ logo alongside the reassuring message – ‘I’m Paper, Recycle Me’.

Tom Lock expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “At The British Crisp Co, sustainability is our passion. We are thrilled to pioneer the world’s first fully recyclable paper pack for crisps.

“Furthermore, our crisps are produced on a UK farm powered by renewable energy, underscoring our commitment to doing good beyond flavor.”

Daniel McAlister, Operations Director at Evopak, highlighted the revolutionary nature of the packaging material, saying, “We have developed a unique solution with Hydropol, poised to revolutionize packaging across various sectors, from snacks to dry foods.”

Mark Lapping, CEO at Aquapak, emphasized the significance of the launch, stating, “Today’s release marks a milestone for Aquapak and our Hydropol technology.

“Producers now have access to an environmentally safe and recyclable alternative that promotes full fiber recovery in standard paper recycling processes.”

The new packaging, set to hit the UK market in the coming months, will feature The British Crisp Co’s most popular flavors – Sea Salt, Salt & Vinegar, and Cheese & Onion.

In related news, Parkside, in collaboration with food and drink brand SMUG introduced a 100% compostable crisp packet in September last year.

Utilizing Park2Nature, this material promises to biodegrade in domestic compost heaps in less than 26 weeks.

Compatible with industrial composting, it can decompose within twelve weeks, offering another sustainable solution to packaging waste.

SMUG is launching its hand-fried potato crisps in the UK with a debut flavour of Cacio e Pepe, with two further flavours planned for 2024. The brand is a new venture from Shoreditch-based food and drink marketing agency Merry Galelli.
