KENYA – BURN Manufacturing (BURN), the foremost clean cookstove manufacturer, distributor, and carbon-offset project developer in Africa, has received recognition and an award for its climate action endeavors at the inaugural Energy Transition Changemakers award by the COP28 UAE Presidency at the ongoing COP 28 summit in Dubai.
Introduced by the COP28 UAE Presidency, the Energy Transition Changemakers initiative seeks to stimulate collaboration within the private sector by identifying global projects that tackle challenges through groundbreaking innovations.
The program emphasizes approaches with the potential for replication and scalability, thereby hastening an equitable energy transition that serves society at large.
This award program acknowledges Changemakers across four pivotal sectors: Renewables, Clean Power, Energy Efficiency, Low-Carbon Hydrogen, and Heavy Emitting Sectors (Steel, Cement, and Aluminum).
BURN was specifically lauded under the Energy Efficiency category for its inventive strategies in advocating sustainable clean cooking practices.
These approaches have not only positively impacted livelihoods but have also promoted health benefits and contributed significantly to reducing deforestation in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Peter Scott, BURN’s CEO, expressed, “This accolade underscores BURN’s pivotal role as a catalyst for positive change in the clean cooking sphere. It’s more than just an award; it reaffirms our dedication to delivering scalable, environmentally conscious solutions.
“Each stove we produce symbolizes progress, empowering households to save time and money while providing clean energy. Our impact extends beyond the cook stove, profoundly impacting households and the planet.”
Since its inception in Africa, BURN has manufactured and distributed over 4 million clean cookstoves, transforming the lives of more than 22 million individuals and preventing 17 million tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere.
These stoves’ efficacy has been independently verified by reputable institutions such as the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Chicago, and through a comprehensive impact assessment survey conducted by Yunus Social Business.
Consistently, these stoves have demonstrated substantial health, financial, and climate action benefits.
BURN’s initiative strengthens the call for increased use of clean energy for cooking in Kenya. Kenya Power is actively promoting the adoption of electric cooking (e-cooking) among its 9.2 million customers, with a target to increase uptake from approximately 90,000 current users to over 500,000 users in three years.
This was disclosed by the company’s Managing Director and CEO, Dr. (Eng.) Joseph Siror, during the launch of the Global eCooking Coalition (GeCCo) during the Africa Climate Week in Nairobi.
GeCCo is an initiative aimed at accelerating the transition from traditional cooking methods to e-cooking, both domestically and commercially.
Recent data indicates that only one percent of electricity customers use the service to cook, with the majority of Kenyans primarily relying on wood fuel and gas.
