NAMIBIA- Coca-Cola Beverages Africa (CCBA) in Namibia has backed a community recycling program that aims to train 250 waste collectors from Windhoek, Swakopmund and Otjiwarong and link them to recyclers.

The initiative is designed to equip participants with valuable skills and insights into income generation through recycling.

CCBA in Namibia will also facilitate connections between the participants and reputable recycling companies, promoting a well-rounded ecosystem for waste utilization.

The Development Workshop of Namibia (DWN) and Recycle Namibia Forum (RNF) have jointly developed a comprehensive recycling guide that serves as a blueprint for the project.

Participants will be empowered to negotiate equitable prices for their final recycled products, promoting a sense of ownership and entrepreneurship.

Each participant will receive a comprehensive training module and a curated recycling starter pack, says the company.

Safety is a primary consideration throughout the program, and CCBA in Namibia will provide essential gear including gloves, reflector jackets and sanitizers.

In addition, the program will assist the local authorities towards cleaner communities and towns in Namibia, while creating an income stream for currently unemployed people.

Enid Johr, Public Relations, Communications and Sustainability Director said: “At CCBA in Namibia, we are leading the industry in making our value chain increasingly sustainable in the way that we manufacture our products, how we distribute them and how we sell them.

“We have the scale and reach to make a real difference, and we’re using our leadership position to drive change and help put our planet on a more sustainable path.

“We want our business and the communities we serve to benefit from greater shared opportunity. This is about more than the bottom line, because opportunity is not measured by money alone. Opportunity means a better future for people across the African continent.”

Meanwhile, Coca-Cola Beverages Africa (CCBA) in Mozambique has moved to schools to empower learners and teachers on good environmental practices.

The company has chosen four schools in Matola, Maputo Province, to participate in an environmental awareness program that aims to improve the quality of life of the participants, promoting public health and stimulating the exercise of environmentally aware citizenship.

The project includes a series of lectures that address topics such as sustainable waste management, environmental conservation and climate change.

Interactive workshops are also held to teach waste reuse practices, highlighting the importance of waste reduction and recycling.

Hands-on activities are another part of the project, with tree planting sessions in collaboration with local authorities and regular schoolyard clean-up campaigns.

Through these actions, participants are encouraged to adopt sustainable practices on a day-to-day basis, making them part of environmental preservation efforts.

The four-month program is being rolled out as a pilot at Ngungunhane, Machava-Sede, Matola-Gare and Matlemele primary schools.
