Collected tubes are upcycled into everyday items.

CHINA – Colgate and Watsons Hong Kong have expanded their joint toothpaste tube recycling initiative as the “Small Acts, Big Smiles Recyclable Take Back Program” enters its second phase.
The initiative, which launched in 2023, aims to reduce plastic waste by collecting and recycling toothpaste tubes of any brand across Hong Kong SAR.
Under the expanded program, consumers can return empty toothpaste tubes to around 180 Watsons stores. Of these, 120 stores now feature dedicated collection bins, enabling convenient self-service drop-off.
The enhanced scheme will run until December 31, 2026, extending one of Hong Kong’s largest consumer participation recycling programs in personal care.
During the program’s first phase, collected tubes were upcycled into recyclable pens through a collaboration with recycling partner The Loops and design studio Gaau1 Up.
These pens were donated to the Hong Kong Young Dentist Federation and subsequently distributed to underprivileged schoolchildren.
“Every act of kindness and every upcycled item helps build a brighter, more sustainable future,” Watsons said in a statement.
To encourage greater public involvement, the second phase introduces increased financial incentives. Consumers can now earn 50 MoneyBack points for every empty toothpaste tube returned, regardless of brand.
MoneyBack members purchasing selected Colgate products featuring the recyclable-tube symbol will also continue receiving double points, redeemable as cash across Watsons outlets.
In addition, until the end of this year, customers returning used toothpaste tubes to participating stores will receive a HK$10 (US$1.30) Colgate eCoupon.
The program ensures both recyclable and non-recyclable components of the returned tubes are responsibly processed. Recyclable materials will be converted into new everyday products, while non-recyclables will be repurposed into building materials.
Colgate aims to fully transition its toothpaste portfolio to recyclable tubes by the end of 2025. The company is working with global partners to convert recycled tubes into products such as furniture, clocks, tableware and stationery.
The personal care sector continues to adopt recyclable packaging. Earlier this year, Albéa Tubes supplied L’Oréal with its fully recyclable (RE)flex tube for the Cool Silver grey hair care range.
The company also partnered with Etat Pur to relaunch its Pure Skincare line in recyclable tubes.
Retailers are likewise expanding take-back initiatives globally. In the UK, Co-op teamed with Podpack to enable customers to return used coffee pods in stores, while Morrisons rolled out Podback-supported coffee pod recycling points in more than 350 branches.
