The Spalding facility is the only dedicated linerless label manufacturing site in the UK.

UK – Coveris, a leading provider of eco-friendly paper and plastic solutions, has announced a US$1.3 million investment in its Linerless Labelling Centre of Excellence in Spalding, England.
According to the company, this move addresses surging demand for innovative, waste-reducing labelling solutions, reinforcing its commitment to environmental responsibility.
The investment, part of a strategic programme launched in late 2022, brings the total funding for the Spalding facility to US$3.3 million.
In a statement, Coveris highlighted that the site, the UK’s only dedicated linerless label manufacturing hub, produces over one billion labels annually for fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) markets across the UK and Europe.
The latest addition, a state-of-the-art ten-colour MPS flexographic press operational since June 2025, enhances production capacity and supports expansion into high-growth sectors like ready meals and food-on-the-go.
Nigel Hewitt, Coveris BU Paper Sales Director, emphasized the significance of this development: “This investment marks a pivotal milestone in delivering world-class linerless solutions.”
“As demand grows for sustainable packaging in both traditional and emerging categories, our advanced technology ensures we remain leaders in innovative labelling.”
The new press, equipped with cutting-edge MPS technology, prints on both paper and filmic substrates, aligning with Coveris’ No Waste vision.
Its E-Sleeve capabilities improve accuracy, minimize waste, and accelerate set-up times, while 100% web inspection ensures superior quality and consistency.
The press also offers cold foil embellishment, enabling visually striking finishes across Coveris’ linerless formats, such as Slidewrap and envelope labels, which reduce reel weight by up to 40% compared to traditional self-adhesive options.
A recent report by industry sources noted Coveris’ ongoing sustainability efforts, including a £5 million investment in its St Neots facility to boost recyclable food-to-go packaging production.
This complements the Spalding expansion, further solidifying Coveris’ leadership in sustainable packaging.
The St Neots project, announced in September 2024, aims to triple capacity for fibre-based products, incorporating automated inspection and waste-reducing systems to support circular reuse.
The company’s ReCover initiative, launched to enhance circular plastic recycling, processes over 10,000 tonnes of waste annually, earning a Silver Award at the 2025 Environmental Packaging Awards.
“Our goal is to drive a circular economy while delivering functional, high-quality packaging,” Hewitt added.
