Duni Group introduces Relevo reuse system in Sweden

The Relevo system makes it easy for consumers to borrow and return reusable takeaway containers through an app.

SWEDEN – Duni Group, a leading provider of dining and food packaging solutions, has launched its innovative Relevo digital reuse system in Sweden’s foodservice market, aiming to transform takeaway packaging with a sustainable approach.

The system, rolled out in collaboration with distributor Carepa, enables consumers to borrow and return reusable takeaway containers via a user-friendly app, aligning with Sweden’s push for eco-friendly practices.

The Relevo system, already a market leader in Germany for reusable cups and containers, allows Swedish consumers to borrow packaging without deposits or manual tracking.

Returns are seamless at any participating location, supported by a localized app and partner platform designed for accessibility. According to Duni, this ensures minimal disruption to existing workflows for businesses.

Since January 2024, Swedish regulations mandate that businesses using over 150 single-use containers daily must offer reusable alternatives.

Relevo provides a practical solution to meet these requirements.

Aaron Sperl, Relevo’s chief sales and marketing officer, emphasized, “Sweden is a key market for sustainable innovation, and we’re thrilled to introduce Relevo’s proven system here, making reuse simple and attractive.”

Carepa, a major supplier to hospitality and retail sectors, is instrumental in the system’s rollout.

Johan Ludvigsson, Carepa’s chief operating officer, noted that Relevo offers a complete, easy-to-implement solution, helping customers comply with regulations while advancing sustainability goals.

A key feature of Relevo is its efficient return process, critical for effective reuse systems. The digital platform ensures smooth, user-friendly returns, encouraging consistent container reuse and waste reduction.

Recent updates indicate Relevo’s success, with over 2,500 HoReCa partners across Europe and a 99% return rate, highlighting its scalability and reliability.

In June 2025, Duni also unveiled its Vista takeaway series, combining enhanced recyclability with improved functionality.

This complements Relevo, offering businesses a mix of reusable and recyclable options to meet diverse needs.

A recent development in Sweden’s sustainable packaging landscape includes Duni’s partnership with Live Nation Sweden, announced in April 2025.

This collaboration makes Duni the exclusive supplier of sustainable packaging for major festivals like Sweden Rock and Way Out West, integrating Relevo’s reusable solutions to reduce waste at large-scale events.

By introducing Relevo and expanding its sustainable offerings, Duni is positioning itself as a leader in Sweden’s foodservice market, addressing regulatory demands and consumer preferences for environmentally conscious solutions.

According to the company, this will ensure consistent print results, meeting the needs of brand owners in competitive markets.

The five-week installation phase includes modernizing the coating section, expanding the coating kitchen, and adding a new pallet packaging line.

Toni Tahvanainen, vice-president of the Simpele mill, noted that preparations have progressed smoothly, with over 35 truckloads of equipment arriving soon and more than 430 professionals working on-site.

The mill, which currently uses 89% fossil-free energy, is projected to reach 98% by the end of 2025, aligning with stringent sustainability goals.

Metsä Board’s CEO, Esa Kaikkonen, emphasized the importance of offering competitive and eco-friendly packaging solutions, particularly as regulatory requirements tighten.

The Simpele mill’s enhancements are expected to strengthen its position in providing reliable, high-quality packaging for food and pharmaceutical industries.

In a related development, a report from July 2025 indicates Metsä Board launched a broader cost-saving and profitability program, targeting a US$200 million annual EBITDA increase by 2027.

This includes efficiency improvements at its Kyro mill and the planned closure of its Tako mill in Tampere by late 2025, potentially affecting 215 jobs.
