Fujifilm launches 40TB native LTO-10 cartridge as demand for high-capacity, cyber-resilient storage surges

This new 40TB cartridge is compatible with the same LTO-10 drive hardware.

INDIA — FUJIFILM Corporation has unveiled its latest high-capacity magnetic tape solution, the FUJIFILM LTO Ultrium 10 (40TB) Data Cartridge, offering a native storage capacity of 40 TB and up to 100 TB when compressed.

Set to begin shipping in January 2026, the new cartridge marks a significant advancement in Fujifilm’s tape storage technology portfolio, targeting organizations managing massive data growth driven by AI, analytics, cloud services, and regulatory archiving requirements.

The new LTO-10 (40TB) cartridge is an upgraded version of the LTO-10 (30TB) model released in June 2025.

It incorporates Fujifilm’s proprietary “fine hybrid magnetic particles,” which enable higher areal density, and a next-generation thin-layer design built with Aramid film.

This film technology reduces overall tape thickness, allowing a 30% increase in tape length per cartridge without compromising durability or reliability.

Importantly, the 40TB cartridge is fully compatible with existing LTO-10 drive hardware, enabling seamless adoption and reducing upgrade costs for enterprises and data centres seeking capacity expansions.

Fujifilm says the new format delivers secure, cost-efficient, and energy-efficient offline storage with inherent cyber-resilience due to its air-gapped nature, making it an essential layer in modern data protection strategies against ransomware and system-wide outages.

Highlighting India’s growing importance in global data infrastructure demand, Koji Wada, Managing Director of FUJIFILM India, underscored the strategic relevance of the launch.

“As India accelerates towards a data-driven and AI-powered economy, the need for secure, scalable, and cost-efficient storage has never been more critical,” he said, adding that Fujifilm is committed to delivering advanced global technologies suited for high-growth digital markets.

J. Solomon Sukumar, Associate Director for Recording Media & Industrial Products at FUJIFILM India, emphasized the broader industry implications, “The launch of the LTO Ultrium 10 (40TB) cartridge reflects Fujifilm’s commitment to addressing this growing demand with technologies that combine capacity leadership, cyber resilience, and long-term reliability.”

He added that the LTO-10 (40TB) format will be particularly valuable for Indian enterprises, data centres, and public institutions managing exponential data growth while enhancing disaster recovery and compliance systems.

As organizations expand AI workloads and digital platforms, the tape format provides a future-proofed storage solution with significantly lower total cost of ownership compared to hard-disk-based systems.

The launch comes as global tape storage demand continues to accelerate. According to the LTO Program Technology Provider Companies, worldwide LTO media shipments grew sharply in 2024 and 2025, driven by hyperscale cloud providers, financial institutions, and government agencies seeking energy-efficient and secure long-term storage.

Fujifilm’s latest advancement positions the company prominently within this resurgent storage segment as enterprises look to balance massive data scaling with cyber-resilient infrastructure.
