USA – American pulp and paper company, Georgia-Pacific has invested US$91 million to upgrade its Monticello Mill in Mississippi to boost efficiency and industry competitiveness.

The company says the project consists of replacing the log line, which includes scales, cranes, a rechipper, unbinding racks and other critical equipment needed to safely unload trucks and prepare logs and chips for processing into pulp.

Drexel Lambert, vice president for Georgia-Pacific containerboard operations said: “This project will create long-term value and improve our capabilities as we work to become the best manufacturer in the industry.

The new log line will reduce truck unloading times, improve truck traffic flow, allow for longer logs and improve wood yield.

It will also improve the facility’s competitive position in the industry and strengthen the mill’s relationships with wood suppliers.

Jeff Joyce, vice president for the Monticello mill added: “This investment reinforces Georgia-Pacific’s commitment to Monticello, Lawrence County and the surrounding area. It will position us for continued success in the future.”

Based in Atlanta, Georgia-Pacific and its subsidiaries are among the world’s leading manufacturers and marketers of bath tissue, paper towels and napkins, tableware, paper-based packaging, cellulose, specialty fibers and building products.

Early this year, the firm donated US$100,000 to Auburn University to fund the installation of a new digester for pulp production research.

Georgia Pacific said the fund will enable engineering students to test and improve a newly patented papermaking innovation.

The Alabama Center for Paper and Bioresource Engineering (AC-PABE) reached out to Georgia Pacific as its current digester is over 30 years old and no longer meets the needs for teaching and research.

Last month, Georgia-Pacific Recycling and Waste Connections, Inc. affiliates announced a multi-year extension of their Recyclable Material Master Purchase Agreement, supporting the continued advancement of the circularity of recyclable commodities through collection and reuse.

Georgia-Pacific Recycling is the exclusive marketer of recyclable commodities processed by Waste Connections affiliates.

The extended agreement between two industry-leading participants provides a steady supply of quality recyclable materials used to make new products and packaging, reducing the need for virgin materials.

Waste Connections operates collection and sorting networks across the U.S. and Canada that recover recyclable materials.

Georgia-Pacific Recycling uses its national network to match this supply with market-based demand from manufacturers who use recyclables to make new products, including Georgia-Pacific paper mills.

This partnership provides a more reliable structure to facilitate the reuse of recyclables – from the curb to manufacturing new products.
