The newly introduced range includes designs that are either completely free of plastic lamination or contain less than 5% plastic.
EUROPE – Graphic Packaging International has unveiled a new line of sustainable paperboard packaging specifically designed for sushi, aiming to help foodservice operators comply with evolving European packaging regulations.
The innovation targets businesses seeking environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional plastic sushi containers, aligning with the European Union’s Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD).
The newly introduced range includes designs that are either completely free of plastic lamination or contain less than 5% plastic, ensuring compatibility with the EU’s recyclability criteria.
The products are also engineered to be recyclable within household waste systems across Europe, reinforcing their environmental appeal.
“The European sushi market is growing rapidly. In Germany, for example, the ready-to-eat sushi segment has surged from 7% to over 30% of the snack market in just a few years,” said Philipp Eissner, Business Development Manager at Graphic Packaging.
“While demand increases, so does the need for packaging that aligns with both consumer expectations and regulatory demands.”
Eissner noted that the new sushi packaging line enables foodservice providers to stay ahead of regulatory shifts while offering packaging that preserves product freshness and enhances visual appeal.
The range includes various formats such as clamshells, trays, pagoda-style containers, and boxes—each featuring fog-free cellulose windows for enhanced visibility.
Trays are available in flat or nested configurations to maximize storage efficiency, especially for space-limited sushi kiosks. The structural design is also tailored for ease of handling and operational convenience.
“As SUPD requirements reshape the European food packaging landscape, our global innovation capabilities allow us to support a smooth transition from plastic to paperboard,” Eissner added.
“Our new sushi range exemplifies how insight-led design can meet the functional and sustainability needs of modern foodservice operators.”
Strategic moves in the U.S. paperboard sector
The product launch follows Graphic Packaging’s announcement of a significant restructuring move in its U.S. operations.
The company plans to close its coated recycled paperboard manufacturing plant in Middletown by June 1, 2025, affecting around 130 employees.
This decision is part of a broader effort to streamline production and consolidate operations at fewer sites.
Production will be shifted to facilities in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and a new plant in Waco, Texas, which is expected to begin commercial operations later this year.
The restructuring is aimed at boosting efficiency and reinforcing Graphic Packaging’s position as a leader in sustainable consumer packaging.
“This is the right time to simplify our manufacturing footprint,” said Michael Doss, President and CEO of Graphic Packaging.
“I want to thank the Middletown team for their contributions to our success. We are committed to supporting affected employees through this transition.”
Doss emphasized that the company’s investments in innovation and operational excellence have positioned it as a global leader in sustainable packaging.
The move to newer, more efficient facilities is also expected to contribute to Graphic Packaging’s environmental goals, including improved water and energy use.
From introducing recyclable sushi packaging in Europe to streamlining operations in the U.S., Graphic Packaging is reinforcing its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and long-term growth.
