Green Bay Packaging enhances Arkansas facility with major upgrades

USA – Green Bay Packaging (GBP), a leading American pulp and paper company, has launched a significant modernization project at its Arkansas Kraft Paper Mill to enhance operational efficiency and sustainability.

Additionally, GBP has strengthened its market presence by acquiring SMC Packaging Group, a regional leader in custom corrugated packaging solutions.

Green Bay Packaging’s multiyear modernization project for its Arkansas Kraft Paper Mill aims to upgrade key infrastructure, focusing on sustainability and operational advancements.

Established in 1965, the Arkansas Kraft Paper Mill has been a cornerstone of GBP’s operations. It produces kraft liner boards and corrugating mediums using a mix of virgin and recycled fibre.

The modernization of Green Bay Packaging’s Arkansas Kraft Paper Mill includes significant infrastructure upgrades to enhance operational efficiency and reliability.

A key component of this effort is replacing critical process systems, such as recovery and biomass boilers.

These upgrades ensure the facility operates at peak efficiency while maintaining high standards for sustainable production.

Green Bay Packaging is also investing in decarbonization initiatives as part of its sustainability commitment.

The project involves installing an electric turbine generator, a crucial step in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Scope 1 and 2.

This aligns with the company’s broader sustainability goals and demonstrates its dedication to environmentally responsible manufacturing practices.

In addition to technical advancements, the project includes acquiring 300 acres of land to support future development and expansion.

This investment reflects the company’s long-term vision for growth, ensuring it has the resources and capacity to adapt to evolving market demands and continue its legacy of innovation.

Will Kress, GBP’s chair and CEO, emphasized the project’s importance, stating, “The Arkansas Kraft Paper Mill, established by my father, Jim Kress, has a proud legacy as an industry leader. This investment will enhance our capabilities and secure our competitive edge for the future.”

The project underscores GBP’s dedication to sustainability and innovation. Executive vice president Bryan Hollenbach notes, “This investment reflects our commitment to fostering innovation and ensuring sustainable operations for years to come. We’re proud to work closely with the state of Arkansas on this initiative.”

The Arkansas Kraft division integrates sustainable practices, sourcing quality virgin fiber from over 250,000 acres of company-managed forestland in Arkansas. These forests ensure a steady supply of raw materials while promoting ecological stewardship.

This modernization reinforces GBP’s position as a leader in the pulp and paper industry and aligns with global trends emphasizing eco-friendly manufacturing.

Acquisition of SMC Packaging Group

GBP further bolstered its operations in June by acquiring SMC Packaging Group, a family-run provider of corrugated packaging solutions based in Springfield, Missouri.

With over 50 years of expertise, SMC specializes in custom corrugated boxes, displays, packaging materials, and equipment, serving markets in Missouri, Arkansas, and Oklahoma.

Under the agreement, SMC will maintain its operations as a corporation wholly owned by GBP. Mark McNay, formerly SMC’s vice president and general manager, will assume the role of president and report to GBP executive vice president Bryan Hollenbach.

Will Kress highlighted the strategic fit of the acquisition, “We are excited to unite two well-established, family-run businesses. This partnership will drive continued growth and success for both Green Bay Packaging and SMC Packaging Group.”

The acquisition reflects the alignment of GBP and SMC’s philosophies, with a mutual emphasis on employee well-being, community engagement, and customer satisfaction.

Kevin Ausburn, SMC’s chair and CEO, remarked, “For over five decades, our team has delivered quality products rooted in community values. Joining Green Bay Packaging aligns perfectly with our commitment to employees and community pride.”
