GERMANY – Henkel has launched an ambitious engagement program called “Climate Connect” to elevate the assessment of CO2 emissions in its global supply chain.
The program, in collaboration with carbon reduction partner “Manufacture 2030”, is designed to drive decarbonization across the value chain by collecting emissions data, defining joint reduction actions, and providing continuous upskilling.
Henkel aims to engage its raw material and packaging suppliers, as well as contract manufacturers and suppliers of traded goods worldwide, where over 90 percent of its Scope 3 upstream emissions originate.
The program will initially focus on recording key metrics like energy usage, water consumption, and waste volumes, gradually expanding to include more suppliers across different Scope 3 categories in the future.
Using this data alongside tailored trainings, Henkel and “Manufacture 2030” will offer participating suppliers personalized support to assess their baseline emissions and implement climate action measures.
Bertrand Conquéret, Chief Procurement Officer at Henkel, emphasized the importance of this initiative for smaller partners who often struggle to measure their CO2 emissions due to resource limitations.
“Climate Connect” aims to empower suppliers with the necessary tools to define emission reduction targets and strategies, ultimately aiding Henkel in achieving its Scope 3 emission reduction goals.
In addition to training and support, the program enables suppliers to track their environmental progress regularly and share generated data through “Manufacture 2030” for visibility among other customers.
Suppliers can also leverage this data for participation in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), a global platform for managing environmental data and accessing green finance opportunities.
Henkel, a co-founder of the “Together for Sustainability (TfS)” initiative, is already collaborating closely with partners in the chemical industry to collect Product Carbon Footprint data from strategic suppliers.
The “Climate Connect” program extends this collaborative approach to a broader supplier base with varying levels of maturity, fostering collective efforts to reduce emissions along the value chain.
Henkel’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint aligns with the Paris Climate Agreement goals. The company has established ambitious targets for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, aiming for a 67 percent reduction by 2030 (base year: 2017).
Moreover, Henkel will develop a net-zero pathway for Scope 3 emissions, focusing on emissions from raw materials and packaging, which currently constitute a significant portion of its value chain emissions.
By 2030, Henkel aims to reduce CO2 emissions from raw materials and packaging by 30 percent, contributing to its broader sustainability objectives.
