Led by the Indian Institute of Packaging, the challenge invites startups and students to create scalable eco-friendly packaging solutions.
INDIA – In a move to transform its packaging sector, India has unveiled the National Packaging Innovation Challenge, a countrywide initiative aimed at fostering sustainable packaging solutions.
Spearheaded by the Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP), the program targets startups and student entrepreneurs with a mission to develop scalable, eco-friendly alternatives to conventional packaging.
The challenge is closely aligned with India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) initiative, emphasizing the modernization of packaging—particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)—while advancing sustainability.
Speaking at the launch event in New Delhi, IIP Chairman Sunil Jain highlighted the urgent need for packaging innovations that not only reduce environmental impact but also meet the stringent requirements of global trade.
Participants are encouraged to design packaging solutions using biodegradable, recyclable, and reusable materials that comply with international sustainability benchmarks.
Real-time innovation with industry collaboration
A standout feature of the program is the “Packathon”, a live, timed competition in which participants tackle actual packaging challenges submitted by industry partners.
The hands-on contest allows innovators to showcase practical, sustainable designs tailored to key sectors such as food, healthcare, and logistics, where packaging influences safety, shelf life, and efficiency.
According to Tanweer Alam, Additional Director at IIP, the global push for greener packaging presents a significant growth opportunity for developing economies.
He cited India’s strong manufacturing infrastructure and expanding pool of technical talent as major assets in positioning the country as a global supplier of sustainable packaging.
Tapping into a growing global market
Industry analysts project the biodegradable packaging market to grow from US$98.7 billion in 2023 to US$176.9 billion by 2032.
This trend opens up vast potential for countries like India to gain a competitive edge in sustainable materials manufacturing.
India’s plastic export sector, currently valued at US$12 billion, is projected to more than double to US$25 billion by 2027.
Experts suggest that advances in sustainable packaging technologies will be pivotal in achieving this target.
As global supply chains strive to lower their carbon footprint, demand for eco-conscious packaging is expected to surge—making initiatives like the National Packaging Innovation Challenge a timely and strategic investment in the future of Indian manufacturing and exports.
