India Post partners with IIP to introduce eco-friendly parcel packaging

This partnership aims is to create air transport packaging for liquid and sensitive items.

INDIA – India Post has announced a landmark collaboration with the Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP) to integrate sustainable packaging solutions into its vast parcel delivery network, a move expected to significantly reduce the environmental footprint of one of the world’s largest postal systems.

The agreement, signed in Mumbai, will see IIP provide its technical expertise in developing packaging materials that meet the functional requirements of India Post while aligning with global environmental standards.

The initiative aims to replace conventional options such as corrugated boxes and cloth wraps with eco-conscious alternatives that are both cost-effective and durable.

A key focus of the partnership is creating packaging tailored for air transport, especially for sensitive or liquid items.

The proposed solutions will be designed to be shock-resistant, ensuring parcels reach recipients safely and intact across India’s expansive delivery network.

The collaboration will also benchmark India Post’s existing packaging practices against international standards, helping identify areas for improvement and adoption of best practices.

To aid implementation, IIP will prepare a pricing approach paper outlining the cost implications of transitioning to sustainable packaging and develop training materials, including videos and graphics, to educate postal staff on new methods and their environmental benefits.

India Post, with its extensive network of 165,000 post offices, has steadily been modernizing its operations to cater to rising parcel volumes driven by e-commerce.

The shift to sustainable packaging is expected to enhance safety, efficiency, and consumer confidence in its services.

This initiative also dovetails with national priorities. In May 2025, IIP launched the National Packaging Innovation Challenge, aimed at startups and student entrepreneurs to design scalable, eco-friendly packaging solutions for domestic industries and exports.

That program aligns with the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat agenda, which emphasizes self-reliance and stronger packaging standards for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Experts say the India Post–IIP collaboration could set a precedent for other logistics and delivery companies.

“With e-commerce and logistics volumes at record highs, packaging sustainability is no longer optional, it’s essential,” said an industry analyst.

“India Post’s vast reach means this move could have ripple effects across supply chains, from SMEs to exporters.”

By embracing sustainable packaging, India Post is positioning itself as a leader in environmentally responsible logistics, while also contributing to India’s broader commitments on waste reduction and circular economy development.
