GERMANY – KHS Group has introduced a sustainable innovation by enhancing its Nature MultiPack system with a kraft paper carrying handle, making it entirely plastic-free.
The Nature MultiPack, known for using adhesive instead of shrink film, paper, or cardboard, already reduces material usage by 85% compared to traditional methods. The new kraft paper handle further boosts its environmental credentials.
In response to growing consumer and regulatory demand for sustainable packaging, the addition of this minimalist handle, developed in collaboration with Hinojosa Packaging Group, offers a practical and eco-friendly solution.
The kraft paper handle is slotted onto two bottles within the pack, regardless of the total number of containers, and secured under the bottle neck rings.
Nature MultiPack’s adhesive-based technology significantly cuts material consumption and energy use, requiring just a third of the energy compared to conventional packaging setups. This not only benefits the environment but also lowers packaging costs for producers.
“This innovation demonstrates how ecological solutions can also be economically advantageous,” said Manfred van Triel, KHS project manager.
“Our focus was on creating a solution that is both functional and easy to integrate into existing production lines.”
The kraft paper handle offers a more comfortable grip than conventional plastic handles, which can dig into hands when carrying heavier packs.
The BottleClip Carrier bends upward when lifted, protecting hands from sharp edges and bottle caps. Once at home, consumers can easily remove and recycle the handle with other paper waste.
The system accommodates a range of pack sizes, from two to eight bottles, with capacities between 250 milliliters and two liters. Minor adjustments to punching dies ensure compatibility across different bottle diameters and volumes.
Rigorous testing and seamless integration
KHS and Hinojosa conducted extensive testing to optimize the handle’s design, focusing on durability, consumer usability, and logistics.
The handle also features space for product information and barcodes, striking a balance between functionality and simplicity.
For beverage producers, the handle’s integration is straightforward. The handles are supplied in cartridges and fed directly into machine magazines, reducing operator intervention and material waste.
The new application module also saves up to four meters in machine length, a crucial advantage for producers with limited space.
