FINLAND – Family-owned business Kiilto has forged a strategic alliance with the packaging recycling app, Bower, to inaugurate a groundbreaking recycling incentive program.
Commencing this month, consumers can reap rewards for conscientiously recycling Kiilto’s array of consumer product packaging through the Bower app.
The product packaging of the company’s distinguished brands, such as Erisan, Serto, and Linna, can now be seamlessly scanned into the Bower app.
Subsequently, upon delivering the packaging to a designated recycling point and ensuring it undergoes proper sorting, consumers can validate their location within the app, thereby earning redeemable points.
These accrued points can be translated into monetary compensation, coupons, or benevolently directed towards charitable causes.
This laudable initiative underscores Kiilto’s commitment to its environmental aspirations, furnishing consumers with tangible incentives for their eco-conscious actions.
Antero Kivioja, the Director of Kiilto’s consumer goods business area, remarked, “Our collaboration with Bower feels organic, given both entities aspire to pioneer environmental responsibility. Kiilto is leaving no stone unturned in aligning with its ambitious environmental goals.”
Responsibility for the product, Kivioja contends, rests squarely with the manufacturer, and Kiilto endeavors to assist consumers in the correct recycling of packaging through various means, including explicit recycling instructions on packaging and the corporate website.
The Bower app, boasting approximately 580,000 users across the Nordic countries, serves as the linchpin in orchestrating the recycling process and the associated rewards system.
This partnership is poised to elevate consumer engagement in recycling, especially considering Kiilto’s survey, which reveals that a significant 38% of laundry detergent buyers prioritize sustainability.
However, consumers often grapple with assessing the responsibility of products and their manufacturers in terms of safety, efficacy, and recyclability.
In a recent development, Kiilto Ventures invested in RECOMA, a pioneering Swedish startup specializing in converting packaging waste into low-carbon, fully circular construction boards.
These innovative boards, capable of replacing traditional materials like plywood, drywall, and oriented strand board (OSB), are produced through a process that involves sterilizing and shredding packaging waste before pressing it into boards under high heat.
This transformative approach enables the recycling and remanufacturing of single-use items into durable components, emitting a significantly reduced 80-90% carbon footprint compared to the production of conventional wood-based or gypsum construction boards.
Christopher Mills, Discovery Partner at Kiilto Ventures, emphasizes the role of waste sorting in enabling innovative upcycling endeavors, citing RECOMA as a prime example of turning discarded items into valuable products.
The construction industry, notorious for its significant contributions to carbon emissions and waste generation, stands to benefit from such sustainable initiatives, fostering a paradigm shift towards zero waste and zero-emission building materials.
