BRAZIL – Klabin, Brazil’s largest producer and exporter of softwood and fluff pulp, packaging paper, and sustainable paper packaging solutions, has secured approval from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its ambitious new greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction goals.
The SBTi approval underscores Klabin’s leadership in aligning its environmental strategies with science-based standards to combat climate change.
The company’s targets include a 42% reduction in GHG emissions by 2030 for scopes 1 and 2, which encompass emissions from Klabin’s own operations and purchased energy, respectively.
Additionally, Klabin is committed to cutting scope 3 emissions—indirect emissions across its value chain—by 42% within the same timeframe.
Looking further ahead, Klabin has set a validated Net Zero target for 2050, aiming to reduce absolute GHG emissions from scopes 1, 2, and 3 by an impressive 90%.
These targets use 2022 as the baseline year for calculations, reflecting a clear roadmap for long-term decarbonization.
Francisco Razzolini, Klabin’s Director of Research and Development, Sustainability, and Innovation, emphasized the company’s elevated focus on sustainability.
“Klabin is at a new stage of ambition and maturity, as reflected in the approval of our GHG reduction targets by the SBTi. This milestone reinforces our commitment to decarbonization beyond our factories. We are determined to contribute effectively to the fight against global warming while pursuing sustainable growth,” he stated.
Klabin’s efforts to reduce emissions are not new; the company has consistently prioritized sustainability in its operations. However, the inclusion of scope 3 emissions in its targets signifies a deeper commitment.
These emissions originate from activities beyond the company’s direct control, such as those produced by suppliers and customers. Addressing scope 3 challenges requires collaboration and innovation across the value chain.
Razzolini highlighted this collaborative approach, noting, “We believe working together holds the greatest potential for impactful actions. Klabin remains committed to engaging suppliers and customers, assisting them, and sharing experiences to advance decarbonization efforts.”
The SBTi approval represents a significant achievement for Klabin, placing the company among global leaders striving for a sustainable future.
By integrating ambitious targets with collective action, Klabin reinforces its role as a pioneer in sustainable packaging and a key contributor to the global fight against climate change.
