CHINA – Shrink film manufacturer Shantou Mingca Packaging and ExxonMobil Asia Pacific Research & Development have introduced a double bubble polyethylene (PE)-based shrink film (PEF) solution.
This cutting-edge solution, crafted using ultra-low density Exceed™ XP performance polyethylene, offers a versatile packaging solution for a wide array of products, including electronics, household and personal care items, medicines, food, books, magazines, plastic utensils, and toys.
The polyethylene-based structure of the solution facilitates easier mechanical recycling compared to conventional POF solutions, a feature that has been third-party validated and certified by TÜV Rheinland.
Moreover, PEF shrink film enhances product presentation, providing exceptional “shelf appeal” that captivates consumers. Its ability to snugly fit around small and soft corners further enhances the overall aesthetics.
This innovative solution boasts impressive shrinkage capabilities, exceeding 70 percent upon heating, while also delivering excellent shrink performance at lower temperatures.
The low-temperature shrinkage capability translates into potential cost savings, as the shrink tunnel consumes less energy compared to conventional POF solutions.
With haze levels as low as 2.8 percent and gloss reaching up to 86 GU, the Exceed™ XP-based PEF offers outstanding optical properties.
In addition, it delivers exceptional softness with a 1% secant modulus as low as 374 MPa, coupled with impressive tensile strength at MD/TD as high as 100 MPa.
Mr. Liu Kun, General Manager at Shantou Mingca Packaging Co Ltd, underscored the transformative potential of PEF in enhancing the recyclability of shrink films, aligning with the ambitious recyclability goals set across the value chain.
PEF represents a significant step towards realizing a circular plastic economy, offering enhanced capabilities to the packaging industry.
Karen Chui, Polyethylene North Asia Market Development Manager at ExxonMobil, emphasized the collaborative effort behind the development of this PEF solution, driven by the industry’s increasing demand for recyclable packaging.
She highlighted ExxonMobil’s commitment to introducing innovative solutions that align with evolving market needs.
This new innovation builds upon ExxonMobil’s commitment to promote circularity, as evidenced by its partnerships with Berry Global and Peel Plastic Products to integrate circular plastics for food packaging into the pet care industry.
Leveraging ExxtendTM technology for advanced recycling, the collaboration focuses on integrating International Sustainability and Carbon Certificate (ISCC) PLUS-certified plastics for use in various household brands.
This advanced recycling technology captures the core value of plastics, including previously unrecycled materials such as food pouches, snack wrappers, and plastic toys, thereby contributing to a more sustainable future.
