NIGERIA – Mobile Power Ltd (‘MOPO’), a UK-based pay-per-use battery technology firm, has entered into a partnership agreement with Hinckley E-waste Recycling (‘Hinckley’) to facilitate the recycling of MOPO batteries utilized at its solar-powered battery rental hubs in Nigeria.
Within this partnership, we will furnish the procedures and protocols for transporting used MOPO batteries in accordance with the Basel Convention for recycling to Accurec, a firm based in Mülheim, Germany.
Chris Longbottom, CEO of MOPO, expressed, “While our primary focus lies in furnishing battery energy services to individuals and businesses in Africa, we also acknowledge the significance of recycling our batteries to mitigate pollution, conserve resources, and ultimately foster a healthier planet for forthcoming generations.
“We are elated to collaborate with Hinckley E-waste Recycling to establish a ‘closed loop’ system, integrating MOPO battery recycling into our service.
“By addressing energy challenges with battery solutions and partnering with a reputable recycling entity, we aspire to drive positive socio-economic transformations across Nigeria as we execute our battery rental model.”
Since 2017, MOPO has been actively engaged in Africa, where it presently conducts 6 million battery rentals annually through its distribution agents operating from solar-powered recharging hubs.
Originating from Sheffield, UK, MOPO’s product lineup includes the larger MOPOMax battery, capable of replacing small petrol generators (0-4kVA) and serving as a battery swap for e-motorbike taxis.
Additionally, the smaller MOPO50 furnishes essential household energy for lighting, phone charging, and Direct Current (DC) appliances.
Each MOPO battery, equipped with integrated payment technology to ensure energy discharge solely upon agent payment via the MOPO App, can be tracked through the MOPO Platform to ascertain its location, whether with an agent, customer, or at its end of life ready for recycling.
The new accord with Hinckley establishes a closed-loop mechanism to address the mounting electronic waste issue and advocate for a more sustainable and environmentally friendly battery industry.
In the preceding year, Samsung Electronics East Africa joined forces with the home appliances retailer Housewife’s Paradise to gather e-waste for recycling as part of a joint endeavor in environmental conservation.
Within the e-waste management program, Housewife’s Paradise will exclusively collect Samsung brand e-waste at a customer’s preferred time and date.
For scheduling a pickup, kindly contact us at 0110730305. Subsequently, the waste will be conveyed to the WEEE Centre, Samsung’s official recycling partner in Kenya, and appropriately disposed of in accordance with established global standards.
