INDIA – Naini Papers has launched a cutting-edge coated paper production system, marking a significant step in its mission to provide sustainable alternatives to single-use plastic packaging.

The newly unveiled paper machine is engineered to produce high-quality, fibre-based coated papers with enhanced barrier properties, making it ideal for flexible packaging applications.

This innovation comes amid increasing global demand for eco-friendly packaging materials. The coated paper developed by Naini Papers is fully recyclable and compostable, helping reduce environmental impact and promoting a circular economy.

The advanced machine applies barrier coatings that significantly boost resistance to moisture and grease, positioning the paper as a strong substitute for plastic in packaging.

By investing in this technology, Naini Papers reinforces its commitment to sustainability while also setting a new benchmark for innovation in India’s paper manufacturing sector.

The company’s environmental focus extends beyond product development. Naini Papers follows responsible sourcing and manufacturing practices, ensuring that no natural forests are affected in its paper production.

Instead, it supports agroforestry programs that not only promote biodiversity but also uplift local communities — a strategy that reflects its broader commitment to environmental stewardship and social responsibility.

This technological leap follows Naini Papers’ 2023 investment in key pulp and paper technologies from Valmet, a global leader in process technologies and automation for the pulp, paper and energy industries.

As part of this collaboration, Valmet will supply technology, automation and services for both a cooking and fibre line rebuild and the installation of a new specialty paper machine (PM 3) at Naini’s Kashipur mill.

For the cooking and fibre line rebuild, Valmet will deliver a SuperBatch digester, an upgraded bleach plant, a TwinRoll Press, and auxiliary equipment. Engineering support, complete process design, and site services are also part of the package.

This rebuild is expected to increase the mill’s production capacity from 300 to 370 bone dry tonnes per day (bdtd).

The centerpiece of the project, the PM 3, is the first of its kind in India. Designed to produce wood-free coated and uncoated grades with basis weights ranging from 40 to 170 grams per square metre, the machine has a design speed of 1,200 metres per minute.

Valmet will supply the headbox, air systems, reel, winder, Industrial Internet applications, and spare parts.

According to Pawan Agarwal, Managing Director of Naini Papers, the investment in PM 3 is a strategic move to tap into India’s growing demand for sustainable, specialty coated paper, especially in the flexible packaging sector.

“We have been successfully collaborating with Valmet on several projects, including pulp mills, and chose to work with them again for this expansion,” said Agarwal.

“The additional pulp capacity will support PM 3, which we believe has huge potential to replace plastics in packaging applications.”

Valmet has included the order in its Q2 2023 bookings, with deliveries scheduled for Q1 2025. While financial details were not disclosed, the scope of the project suggests a value between €40 million and €60 million (US$43.5 million–65.25 million).

With this investment, Naini Papers is not only increasing its production capacity but also offering a tangible, scalable solution to plastic pollution — helping to shape a more sustainable future for India’s packaging industry.
