Nigerian Bottling Company introduces recycling banks in Abuja and Lagos

NIGERIA – In a significant move towards environmental stewardship, the Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC) Ltd. has launched a recycling bank in the Ifako-Ijaiye housing estate, Agege.

This initiative signals a commitment to a cleaner, more sustainable future, aiming to collect and recycle a bottle or can for each one introduced into the market by 2030, catalyzing a transformative approach to waste and recycling for Lagosians.

At the core of NBC’s mission is a dedication to addressing the challenges posed by single-use plastics.

Mrs. Oluwasoromidayo George, NBC’s Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Director, underscores the company’s focus on strategic partnerships, packaging innovation, and sustainable waste management solutions.

Partnering with Chanja Datti Recycling Co Ltd., NBC has established 10 recycling banks across Lagos and Abuja, with the Agege facility primarily focused on collecting polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles.

This collaborative effort encourages community participation in responsible waste management by offering a tangible incentive: converting plastic waste into cash.

Supported by the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and the Lagos Building Investment Company, this initiative highlights the vital role of community engagement in driving environmental change.

By incentivizing residents to participate in recycling efforts, NBC not only fosters a culture of sustainability but also contributes to socio-economic wellbeing.

While this initiative marks progress in combating plastic pollution, it also underscores the broader challenges of waste management in urban settings.

Success depends on widespread community participation and the establishment of comprehensive recycling infrastructure.

As NBC expands its network of recycling banks, the project offers insights into the potential for corporate-community partnerships to drive environmental sustainability.

With each recycled bottle, Lagos moves closer to a cleaner, more sustainable future, setting a precedent for cities worldwide.

This initiative come on the heel of another where, Yalo, in partnership with the Food and Beverage Recycling Alliance (FBRA) and Seven-Up Bottling Company Plc, launched its conventional AI platform in Nigeria.

This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to addressing environmental challenges and promoting conscientious business practices.

Manuel Centeno, Yalo’s Vice President of Sales, anticipates a positive shift in recycling practices and sustainability trajectory in Nigeria through this innovative partnership with FBRA.
