KENYA – The Packaging Producer Responsibility Organization (PAKPRO), in collaboration with Tetra Pak East Africa and Naivas supermarket, has launched a campaign to boost carton recycling across Kenya.

This initiative encourages individuals to collect used beverage cartons (UBCs) and drop them off at selected Naivas stores. Participants have the chance to win exciting prizes.

By incentivizing participation, the campaign highlights the significance of carton recycling within local communities.

This initiative is part of a broader movement advocating for a circular economy in Kenya, focusing on reducing, reusing, and recycling waste products.

The country has made remarkable progress in enhancing the collection and recycling of used cartons, primarily through initiatives spearheaded by Tetra Pak East Africa and PAKPRO.

These organizations have partnered with local recyclers, including Ramani Warehouse Limited in Thika and Ekotech Limited in Nairobi, to establish a robust system for recovering post-consumer liquid board packaging.

The current goal is to recover 1,500 metric tonnes of used beverage cartons, which constitutes approximately 30% of Kenya’s total liquid board packaging output.

This project aligns with Kenya’s Sustainable Waste Management Act of 2022, which mandates Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations.

Under these regulations, producers must manage the waste generated from their products, thus promoting accountability within the industry.

The benefits of this initiative extend beyond environmental conservation; it also opens up economic opportunities for collectors and aggregators while reducing pollution linked to packaging waste.

Moreover, the campaign is set to increase public awareness about the critical importance of waste segregation and recycling and provide essential infrastructure for collection in key counties, including Nairobi, Kiambu, Kajiado, and Nakuru.

Building a circular economy is vital for ensuring that post-consumer cartons are recovered and recycled and reintroduced into the production cycle.

This approach supports both environmental sustainability and economic development in Kenya, as it helps create jobs, reduces waste, and conserves resources.

Through this collaborative effort, PAKPRO, Tetra Pak, and Naivas aim to make significant strides in carton recycling, demonstrating a collective commitment to protecting the environment and fostering sustainable practices in the community.
