Portugal to introduce nationwide Deposit Return Scheme by 2026

The initiative will be overseen by SDR Portugal while waste management technology firm Sensoneo will provide the IT infrastructure.

PORTUGAL – Portugal is set to roll out its national deposit return scheme (DRS) for single-use beverage containers by 2026, marking a significant step in the country’s efforts to improve recycling rates and reduce plastic waste.

The initiative will be overseen by SDR Portugal, a non-profit organization, while waste management technology firm Sensoneo will provide the IT infrastructure to ensure smooth implementation and operation.

Sensoneo’s digital platform will play a crucial role in managing the logistics of the DRS, including container tracking, transportation, and warehouse operations.

This system enables real-time monitoring of collected materials, thereby optimizing efficiency throughout the recycling process.

Additionally, a suite of mobile applications will be introduced to enhance communication and coordination among all stakeholders, including consumers, retailers, and recycling facilities.

A key feature of Portugal’s DRS is the extensive network of collection points, which is expected to range between 7,000 and 10,000 locations across the country.

These return points will be established in supermarkets, convenience stores, and public spaces to ensure accessibility and encourage widespread participation.

Consumers will receive a financial incentive for returning empty containers, reinforcing positive recycling behaviors.

Portugal’s scheme also stands out for its integration of the hotel, restaurant, and catering (HoReCa) sectors.

By incorporating these businesses into the DRS framework, the country aims to enhance collection rates and ensure that beverage containers used in commercial settings are properly recycled.

Sensoneo, which previously supported Malta’s DRS launched in 2022, believes that Portugal’s model will serve as a benchmark for larger European nations considering similar initiatives.

The expansion of DRS programs across Europe aligns with broader EU sustainability goals. Earlier this year, the UK government announced plans to introduce legislation for a national deposit return scheme covering bottles and cans across England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

However, the UK’s implementation is scheduled for October 2027, a year after Portugal’s system is expected to be operational.

By implementing the DRS, Portugal is positioning itself as a leader in circular economy initiatives, addressing both environmental and economic concerns.

The scheme aims to reduce plastic pollution, increase recycling efficiency, and promote a more responsible approach to waste management.

If successful, Portugal’s model could inspire other countries to develop similar frameworks for combating single-use plastic waste and enhancing resource recovery.
