US – US-based flexible packaging company ProAmpac has partnered with wholefood nutrition producer Purition to launch a fully recyclable paper sachet for nutritional powders.
This fully recyclable high barrier paper sachet replaces Purition’s original multilayer non-recyclable packaging for its powdered meal shakes.
The two firms have enhanced the sustainability characteristics of the sachet (ProActive Recyclable paper) by minimizing the overall material without sacrificing product protection qualities.
ProAmpac Chief Commercial Officer Adam Grose said: “Purition engaged with ProAmpac ’s material-science experts to create a recyclable packaging solution for their nutritional powders.
“This partnership led to the launch of ProActive Recyclable paper sachet and is further proof that collaborative innovation brings pioneering sustainable paper packaging to market.”
The newly launched packaging is digitally printed with ProActive Recyclable paper sachets to enable Purition to smoothly transition to the new structure with slight graphic adjustments.
In addition, the paper-based technology features high oxygen and moisture barriers to protect dry powder.
Lynsey Maddison, Senior Product Development Manager at ProAmpac Europe explained that: “This paper-based technology offers the high oxygen and moisture barrier needed for dry powder protection. The product also has optimum stiffness for shelf appearance and consumer handling.”
The move comes at a time when 28% of global consumers are willing to sacrifice product protection for a more environmentally sustainable packaging design, according to Innova Market Insights.
Purition Managing Director Edward Taylor said: “As an environmentally focused brand, Purition wanted to provide consumers with more sustainable packaging.
“We approached ProAmpac with this challenge and they answered with a novel paper sachet solution that is easy to recycle.
“This new format, coupled with crisp digitally printed graphics, supports Purition’s brand and sustainability promise.”
Based in Cincinnati, ProAmpac provides customers with easy storage, extended shelf life and portability and helps reduce energy consumption and its effect on the environment during transportation.
The company uses bio-based feedstock like sugarcane or corn to make its products and is suitable for all market goods like food and beverage, pet foods and treats.
In April this year, the company launched ProActive PCR Retort pouches, which are designed to offer improved sustainability for human and pet food packaging.
The pouches were launched in response to the growing demand for post-consumer recycled (PCR) packaging solutions.
The pouches offer 30% PCR content or more by weight, reducing the use of virgin resins in the packaging. These pouches also comply with the recently enforced UK Plastic Packaging Tax.
