SCOTLAND – Pulpex, a leader in sustainable packaging technology, has successfully raised £62 million (US$78m) in a Series D funding round, marking a significant milestone in its mission to revolutionize the packaging industry.
The investment, led by the National Wealth Fund (NWF) and the Scottish National Investment Bank, will support the establishment of a new large-scale packaging facility in Glasgow, Scotland.
The NWF has committed £43.5 million (US$55.04m) in direct equity, while the Scottish National Investment Bank will co-invest £10 million (US$12.65m).
An additional £8.5 million (US$10.75m) has been secured from existing investors, reinforcing strong confidence in Pulpex’s innovative approach to sustainable packaging.
Notably, this funding round marks NWF’s first major investment in Scotland since its transformation into a strategic growth fund.
John Flint, CEO of the National Wealth Fund, emphasized the importance of investing in solutions that drive the circular economy.
“We need to recycle more and unlock the growth potential of the circular economy. That requires sophisticated, long-term investment in both infrastructure and packaging innovation. Exciting technological advancements like Pulpex need catalytic investment to scale and commercialize,” Flint stated.
By financing Pulpex’s new Glasgow facility, the NWF aims to remove barriers to future private investment and lay the groundwork for further growth in sustainable packaging.
Game-changing sustainable bottle
Pulpex has developed an innovative fibre-based bottle made from sustainably sourced wood pulp, offering a plastic-free, recyclable, and biodegradable alternative to traditional packaging materials.
The bottle is designed to be recycled alongside paper and cardboard in standard household recycling streams, significantly reducing its environmental impact.
Pulpex claims its patented technology offers a lower carbon footprint compared to glass or plastic packaging, making it an attractive solution for companies seeking to reduce plastic waste and carbon emissions.
With the infusion of new capital, Pulpex plans to transition from research and pilot production at its Cambridge, England, headquarters to full-scale manufacturing in Glasgow.
The new facility will have the capacity to produce 50 million bottles annually and is expected to create 35 new jobs in Scotland.
Pulpex has already established partnerships with major fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) brands, including Diageo, Unilever, and Kraft Heinz, further cementing its role as a frontrunner in sustainable packaging innovation.
This expansion represents a major step toward commercializing Pulpex’s technology, making eco-friendly, fibre-based packaging solutions more accessible to global brands and advancing the shift toward a more sustainable packaging industry.
