NORWAY – Saudi chemical company SABIC, Estiko Packaging Solutions and Coldwater Prawns of Norway forge a partnership to develop a highly sustainable new packaging pouch for frozen prawns.

SABIC says that the pouch is made from a multi-layer film produced by Estiko Packaging Solutions using a circular certified random polymer grade of its PP QRYSTAL with an ocean-bound plastic (OBP) content of around 60%.

Contributing to the recovery and reuse of OBP, the innovative packaging solution reflects the partners’ overall commitment to sustainability and complies with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal #14 for ‘Life Below Water’.

SABIC Petrochemicals Engineering Thermoplastics & Market Solutions general manager Abdullah Al-Otaibi said: “Recovering OBP waste that could otherwise end up in our waterways or oceans is a complex challenge and requires close collaboration with dedicated value chain partners.

“We are proud to present yet another successful joint project that demonstrates a feasible solution to contribute to this global issue with a frozen foods packaging pouch that capitalizes on the sustainable benefits of our TRUCIRCLE program.

Abdullah Al-Otaibi explains that with the pouch high in OBP, the application helps all players reduce their carbon footprint and support the circularity of flexible packaging.

The new packaging pouch aligns closely with the sustainable harvesting practices of Coldwater Prawns of Norway.

Hege Furnes, COO at Coldwater Prawns of Norway, comments: “The material choice for our new pouches meets with our care for the ecosystem on which our business relies.

By using an OBP-based packaging product, we are making an active contribution to prevent abandoned plastic litter from polluting the sea. In addition, the pouches are fully recyclable in existing material recovery systems for flexible packaging.”

The new Coldwater Prawns of Norway AS pouch will be officially launched and presented by SABIC during Interpack in Düsseldorf, Germany.

Meanwhile, Sabic’s innovative material used to develop frozen food packaging has won a gold Edison Award in the category of sustainability.

The awards, established in 1987 by Illinois-based not-for-profit group Edison Universe, are designed to honor global innovation in new products, services and business leadership.

The 2023 award-winning material is described by Sabic as sustainable packaging that uses plastic scrap that otherwise would have ended up in the world’s oceans and waterways.

Sabic says it worked in partnership with Portugal-based packaging maker Polivouga and its customer, seafood products company Nueva Pescanova Group, to create what Sabic calls “the world’s first frozen food packaging solution using [its] certified circular polyethylene from feedstock sourced from ocean-bound plastic.

“I am delighted the work of my team at Sabic has been recognized for this innovative solution,” said Sami Al-Osaimi.

This is the third consecutive year Sabic says it has been recognized by the Edison Awards. This year, the company won three gold and two bronze awards in different categories.
